Chery Omoda 5 coming to Malaysia by mid-2023; the first RHD market to receive the car

KUALA LUMPUR: It was only recently that Chery Malaysia announced its plan to introduce locally-assembled models in the country. These CKD models will only be put to domestic use and will not be exported to other countries.

The Chinese automaker will soon be returning to the Malaysian market with the Omoda 5 in mid-2023. Thus making ours the first right-hand-drive market to welcome the car, ahead of Australia and South Africa. The next car to follow will be the bigger Tiggo 8 Pro which will be launched next year.

As confirmed by the automaker, both the cars will be offered as locally-assembled units and so will skip the high tax duties. With the launch, Chery also aims to open 30 dealerships all around Malaysia.

“We’re going to launch the cars in the middle of next year (2023). Before launch, we can prepare around 30 outlets to support our network,” said Shawn Xu, Vice President of Chery International and President for the ASEAN market.

As per Shawn, the brand requires numerous dealers to boost customers' confidence by building a strong network and after-sales service.

What is the reason behind the selection of the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro for introduction into the Malaysian market?

Well, the two Chery models were selected for the Malaysian market based on the market response. While the Omoda 5 will appeal to young buyers, the Tiggo 8 Pro flagship model will build a stronger base for the brand.

The preview event held by the automaker in October also showcased other right-hand-drive models, the Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro which are also being studied to enter the Malaysian market.

With the introduction and well-performance of Chinese cars like the Proton X50 and X70, Chery is optimistic about its future in the Malaysian market.
