Chery Malaysia earns SIRIM certification for EV batteries

KUALA LUMPUR:  Chery Malaysia has achieved a great milestone, becoming the first automotive brand in the country to obtain SIRIM certification for its Electric Vehicle (EV) Battery Pack – Lithium Battery.

The certification was granted by SIRIM QAS International, Malaysia’s premier body for certification, inspection, and testing.

This accomplishment shows that Chery in Malaysia are serious about adhering to rigorous safety and performance standards while bolstering the country's growing EV ecosystem.

During the certification ceremony, SIRIM QAS International Chief Executive Officer, Nur Fadhilah binti Muhammad, presented the certificate to Leo Chen, President of Chery Malaysia.

“This achievement signifies more than a certification; it reflects Malaysia’s progress in adopting globally recognized safety and quality standards. SIRIM QAS is honoured to play a part in supporting Chery Malaysia’s journey toward sustainable mobility solutions,” said Nur Fadhilah.

The certification process involved extensive testing conducted in China, adhering to the stringent United Nations R100 standard.

These tests focused on reliability, efficiency, and durability, ensuring the batteries meet international safety and performance benchmarks.

For Malaysian Chery fans, this certification is more than a technical achievement—it provides reassurance about the quality and safety of Chery's EVs.

It also aligns with Malaysia's sustainability goals, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint and greener future.

Chery Malaysia’s current all-electric offering, the OMODA E5, serves as their only electric vehicle on sale in Malaysia.

Priced at RM146,800, the OMODA E5 features a 61kWh lithium-ion phosphate blade battery, offering a WLTP-rated range of 430km.

Its 201hp motor delivers 340Nm of torque, blending performance with eco-conscious engineering. Available in Aqua Green, Khaki White, Phantom Grey, and Dark Black, the OMODA E5 has also achieved five-star safety ratings from Euro NCAP and ANCAP.

In October, Chery marked another milestone by rolling out its first Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit of the OMODA E5 from the Inokom Plant in Kulim, Kedah.

Looking ahead, Chery Malaysia said they  are set to expand its electrified offerings, with plans to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) alongside its battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in 2025.

The company also aims to secure SIRIM certification for batteries in its upcoming EV lineup, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable growth and customer satisfaction.

As Chery continues its expansion in the region, the brand is doubling down on the development of innovative green energy technologies.

This latest milestone not only strengthens Chery's position in Malaysia’s automotive market but also demonstrates its readiness to support the nation’s transition toward sustainable mobility.
