Check out the flagship electric SUV, the Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Maybach has previewed its first electric SUV at the ongoing Munich motor show 2021. Yes, we are talking about the Concept EQS that features several Maybach-specific elements, like the brand's signature two-tone colour scheme and a bespoke cabin with individual rear seats providing 'first-class' accommodation.

After the EQS and EQE sedan, the EQS SUV is Mercedes's third bespoke electric model, offering around 600 km of range. The automaker intends to position the EV on top of the segment that is not yet tried by Maybach's rivals like Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

Philipp Schiemer, the head of Mercedes-Benz' Top End Vehicle Group said, “The Concept EQS represents the transformation of Mercedes-Maybach from a tradition-rich luxury brand into a more progressive electric future.”

The firm further said, “Customers in key markets such as China, Russia, South Korea, the US and Germany are becoming younger – and with it, the definition of luxury is also changing.”

Key highlights of the Maybach EQS SUV -

  • It retains the same body structure as its Benz-badged donor model along with several Maybach-centric design cues
  • The front fascia gets a striking black panel grille with graphics similar to a chrome grille and vertical louvres

  • Bonnet features 'MAYBACH' letting and a Mercedes-Benz star, followed by longitudinal trim strips
  • The front air ducts, side window frames, and B-pillars get chrome treatment
  • The automatically opening doors feature running boards underneath

  • The SUV stands on aerodynamically optimised 24-inch wheels
  • Also part of its striking exterior is a prominent roof-mounted spoiler, unique taillamps graphics, and D-pillars with Maybach badging

  • The show car was seen in a two-tone livery - Obsidian Black metallic and Zircon Red metallic, both separated by a chrome pinstripe

Interior

  • The dashboard here features the brand's new full-width curved Hyperscreen (comprising of three digital displays)
  • There's also a large storage area that includes a refrigerated compartment

  • The SUV offers utmost comfort thanks to the heavily cushioned seats and integrated footrests at the rear

Engine

Mercedes-Maybach is yet to announce the powertrain details, however, as per some industry experts, the SUVs production version will be powered by the same mill that powers the newly announced AMG EQS 53 sedan. Paired to the e-motors, together they churn out 659 hp and 949 Nm of torque.

The EQS SUV will go into production in 2022 with a Maybach variant joining in later.
