KUALA LUMPUR: The day we all have been waiting for is finally here. The 2020 Defender has finally made its debut after a long, long wait.
The company’s latest off-roader underpins the D7x architecture which has an all-aluminium monocoque built. It features a 29,000 Nm per degree of torsional rigidity, i.e., three times more than the conventional body-on-frame design from Land Rover.
The Land Rover SUV launched recently is the Defender 110 version, and shortly following it will be the Defender 90. The numbers distinguish the two vehicles in terms of the number of doors and dimensions.
On the dimension front, the 2020 Defender 110 features 5,018 mm in length (including the tailgate-mounted spare wheel), 2,105 mm in width, and 1,967 mm in height. The wheelbase stands at 3,022 mm, and the front and rear track display a width of 1,704 mm and 1,699 mm, respectively. The SUVs have a wading depth of 900 mm and its departure, rampover, and approach angles measures 40, 38, and 38, respectively.
As for the upcoming 2020 Defender 90, the dimensions sheet reads 4,583 mm in length (with the spare wheel), 1,969 mm high on air springs, and 1974 mm high on coil springs. The wheelbase measures 2,587 mm. Front track widths are - 1,706 mm for air spring-equipped trim and 1,704 mm for coil-sprung ones, and rear track width is 1,702 mm for both the versions. It has a water wading depth of 850 mm on coil springs and 900 mm on air springs. The departure, rampover, and approach angles are 40, 31, and 38, respectively.
The 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 is available in two petrol and two diesel powerplants. The diesel kit includes a 2.0-litre inline-four-cylinder in two different tunings - 200 PS and 240 PS at 4,000 rpm. The torque is identical at 430 Nm at 1,400 rpm in D200 and D240 versions, respectively.
The petrol models are P300 and P400. The former is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit offering 300 PS at 5,500 rpm and 400 Nm at 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. The latter gets a 3.0-litre mild-hybrid inline-six engine pooping out 400 PS at 5,500 rpm and 550 Nm at 2,000 to 5,000 rpm.
All the powerplants petrol and diesel are coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission with the two-speed transfer.
