BMW X6: Variants explained
The third-gen BMW X6 made its global debut in the summer of 2019 and it arrived in Malaysia just last year. So, it’s pretty fresh for us in that sense, however, time waits for none or nor does customers taste. Therefore, Munich has started preparing for a facelift and there seems to be a bucket load of revision in store.
We have no clue as to when the revised model will enter Malaysia, so it’s best to enjoy what we have now, i.e., fully imported BMW X6. Today, we’ll be discussing the coupe-cum-SUV’s variants.
BMW X6 xDrive40i M Sport Variants & Price
The Malaysian-spec X6 is available in one single variant option, the xDrive40i M Sport. Thus saving buyers the confusion of which trim to pick over which.
As for the price point, the xDrive40i M Sport retails for RM 729,800 on-the-road without insurance. It includes a 5-year free scheduled service package and a 5-year, unlimited-mileage warranty. Thus, making it RM 110,000 costlier than the X5, the car on which it is based.
BMW X6 xDrive40i M Sport Exterior
On many ends, the X6 looks similar to the X5, however, it comes with a few embellishments of its own along with some higher level of specifications. So, let’s talk about its design language in detail, starting from the front fascia.
To begin with, the X6 bears a similar front end as the X5. Catching our maximum attention here is a unique trapezoidal double kidney grille along with the rather showy ‘Iconic Glow’ grille illumination. The grille setup is accompanied by sharp and edgy adaptive Laserlight headlamps with three-dimensional daytime running lights and LED fog lights.
On to the side, the car gets a dynamic edge from the Air Breather front fender that cuts into the wheel arches. Also, the massive 21-inch Y-spoke Style 741 M two-tone design wheels accentuate its strong shoulders. Not to forget, the X6 signature design cue, the lower roof and satin aluminium window surround and roof rails.
At the rear, is the X6’s signature sloping windscreen, slimmer L-shaped two-piece LED tail lamps followed by a number plate, and large vertical vents. It also gets twin rear spoilers with raised outer sections - one on the short rear deck and the other on the roof’s trailing edge.
BMW X6 xDrive40i M Sport Interior
On the inside, the X6 as can be expected for a car of its stature puts forward a luxe cabin filled with features working on making the journey comfortable.
The SUV benefits from the range-topping BMW Live Cockpit Professional infotainment system, which includes twin 12.3-inch displays and a new BMW Operating System 7.0 with a revised user interface. It can be operated via gesture control, central touchscreen, iDrive Controller, or advanced Intelligent Personal Assistant voice control system.
Other inclusions being -
- Twin 10.2-inch rear touchscreen
- Keyless entry & push-button start
- Head-up display
- Four-zone climate control
- Powered steering wheel
- Power-adjustable sports seats with driver's side memory
- Panoramic glass sunroof
- Qi wireless charging
- 464-watt Harman Kardon sound system
- 14-speakers

BMW X6 xDrive40i M Sport Engin
Powering the xDrive40i M Sport is a 3.0-litre turbocharged starting-six mill pumping out a maximum power of 340 PS from 5500 to 6500 rpm along with a peak torque of 450 Nm from 1500 to 5200 rpm. The power unit is mated to a ZF eight-speed sport automatic gearbox along with an xDrive all-wheel drive system.
On the performance front, the X6 is capable of completing a century sprint in just 5.5 seconds.
BMW X6 xDrive40i M Sport Safety
The safety profile is as strong as one can imagine, thanks to the Driving Assistant Professional package. This one includes a bunch of gears like -
- Autonomous emergency braking with cross traffic detection
- Lane centring assist
- Adaptive cruise control with stop & go
- Lane keeping assist with adaptive side collision protection
- Autonomous lane change assistant
- Blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert
Wait, there's more. There is the Parking Assistant Plus with a 360-degree camera system and Reversing Assistant (it can retract the last 50 meters of the reverse). Also, part of the kit is Active Protection that on detecting an impending accident, tensions the side windows, seat belts, and sunroof.
So, in conclusion, the Malaysian-spec X6 is a pretty good car with a lot to offer. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
