BMW Alpina reveals XD3 and XD4 performance SUVs

KUALA LUMPUR: BMW has just recently unveiled the facelifted versions of the X3 and X4 and here we have their Alpina versions in front of us. Too soon, isn’t it? Dubbed as the XD3 and XD4, tuned BMW models not only boast diesel engines under the bonnet but also other upgrades that call for a fresh appeal. 

Starting the details with mechanical configuration, here the new Alpina XD3 and XD4 are powered by an upgraded version of BMW’s quad-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six unit. The new engine generates a maximum power of 389 hp and a peak torque of 800 Nm. That means, an increase of 30 Nm in torque over the earlier models. However, if we see the transmission, the performance crossovers continue with the same eight-speed automatic transmission along with an xDrive AWD system.

Performance-wise, the new XD3 and XD4 are capable of running from zero to 100 kmph in 4.6 seconds, before attaining a top speed of 267 kmph and 268 km/h, respectively.

Other than this engine, the Alpina XD3 is also tuned with a turbo diesel, mild-hybrid setup which uses a twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six delivering 350 hp and 730 Nm. This increases the century sprint timing to 4.9 seconds and reduces the top speed to 254 kmph.

Despite different engines, the Alpina versions of the BMW X3 and X4 also have standard-fit adaptive dampers and stiffer lowering springs for a sportier driving experience, The tuner also tweaked the steering for more sensitivity and precision to get a more intuitive response. A rear limited-slip differential and Performance Control are also included.

In terms of design, the new BMW Alpina SUVs feature an enlarged kidney grille upfront along with redesigned LED headlights and tail lights, just like the new X3 and X4. Further, the Bavarian tuner gets its front air dam, a rear diffuser, quad round tail pipes, and the brand’s signature multi-spoke alloy wheels The 20-inch wheels are shod with 255/45ZR20 front tyres and 285/40ZR20 rear tyres. There is also a 22-inch version on offer. As for the interior, customised stitching and embroidery for the leather upholstery are available with the models.

The deliveries of the new XD3 and XD4 will start in the European market this November with a price tag of 85,900 euros (RM 430,012) and 89,100 euros (RM 446,031), respectively.
