BMW 5 Series gets two new plug-in hybrid variants - 530e and 550e

KUALA LUMPUR: BMW has expanded the lineup of the eighth-generation 5 Series sedan with the addition of two new plug-in hybrid variants - 530e and 550e xDrive. The PHEV models are now available to order in the European market.

The all-new 2024 BMW 530e is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol paired with an 184 PS/280 Nm electric motor. The setup combinedly produces a maximum power of 299 PS and a peak torque of 450 Nm transferred to wheels via an 8-speed transmission. Performance-wise, the sedan runs from a standstill to 100 kmph in 6.3 seconds and achieves a top speed of 230 kmph.

Also part of the plug-in hybrid system is a 19.4 kWh battery pack that offers an all-electric range of up to 103 km (on the WLTP cycle). With the help of a 7.4 kW charger, the battery juices up completely in three hours and 15 minutes.

On the contrary, the 2024 BMW 550e xDrive comes equipped with a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine and a 197 PS/ 280 Nm motor, combinedly churning out 489 PS and 700 Nm. These output levels are sufficient to propel the sedan from zero to 100 kmph in 4.3 seconds and clock a top speed of 250 kmph.

The battery capacity is the same, at 19.4 kWh, as we see in the BMW 530e; however, here it provides a slightly lesser driving range of up to 90 km.

In terms of equipment, the new BMW 5 Series PHEV variants get 19-inch alloy wheels, BMW Iconic Sounds Electric, Adaptive Chassis Professional, Integral Active Steering, BMW Interaction Bar, BMW Curved Display (combining 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment display), sports seats, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, Parking Assistant with Reverse Assist and several other advanced driver assistance systems.

The 2024 BMW 530e price in Germany starts at EUR 65,300 (approx. RM 324k) while the 2024 BMW 550e xDrive retails at EUR 77,300 (approx. RM 384k).
