BMW 4 Series Coupe: Pros and cons & should you buy one?

It was only recently that BMW Malaysia launched the all-new 4 Series Coupe. In the local market, the new coupe is offered in one single trim option, the 430i Coupe M Sport that is priced at RM 441,680 with SST exemption. It is to be noted that included in the base price is a 2-year unlimited warranty with zero free services. At an additional RM 13,120, customers can opt for the additional 5-year warranty and free service package.

Interested buyers or enthusiasts can check out BMW 4 Series Coupe full details here, however, today we’ll be discussing the coupe’s pros and cons. Yes, this amazing vehicle despite its great spec kit misses out on a few essentials and today we’ll highlight them.

Let’s first start with BMW 4 Series Coupe’s pros -

Powerful engine

This rear-wheel drive coupe is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine that churns out a maximum power of 285 hp along with a peak torque of 400 Nm from 1,550 to 4,400 rpm. The mill is paired to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission that comes as standard.

On the performance front, the entire setup helps propel the 1,620 kg coupe to complete the century sprint in 5.8 seconds and attain a top speed of 250 kmph.

Impressive optional kit

As mentioned above for RM 454,800 one can get the BMW 430i Coupe M Sport with the optional 5-year warranty and free service package. But here’s the catch, this tag also includes an Innovation Package worth RM 36,000. What’s that? Well, the package here includes several lux amenities like - Vernasca leather upholstery, high beam assist, BMW Laserlights, BMW Connected Package Professional, Harman Kardon surround sound system, and Sensatec instrument panel.

What else? BMW Malaysia is offering an all-back set of wheels - M light alloy wheels double-spoke style 791 M at no additional cost or grippier performance tyres for RM 8,290 (full four set). One can even pair the standard tyre with Y-spoke style 783 Bicolour set at RM 10,120 or performance tyres for RM 18,400. For RM 13,170 is available a more unique 19-inch BMW Individual light double-spoke style 793 bicolour.

Other optional goodies are -

  • M suspension for RM5,240
  • Powered tailgate for RM4,360
  • BMW Individual Lights Shadow Line for RM2,620
  • M Carbon exterior package for RM25,290
  • M rear spoiler for RM1,750
  • Front seats with lumbar support for RM2,180
  • Heated front seats for RM3,320
  • Ventilated front seats for RM7,850
  • Galvanised switchgears for RM880
  • Gesture control for RM 2,620
  • Remote engine start function for RM 3,060
  • Head-up display for RM 9,600

Not to forget, the more advanced Driving Assistant Professional kit is available for RM 12,210 and the active cruise control with stop-and-go function costs RM 3,930.

A great exterior/interior colour palette

Well, the BMW 4 Series Coupe sure looks stunning (some might think otherwise or so). However, it is the exterior colour options that make the coupe look super cool, all enhancing its cuts, creases, and other features. BMW Malaysia is offering the 430i M Sport in six exciting tones - Arctic Race Blue metallic, Black Sapphire metallic, Alpine White, Portimao Blue metallic, Tanzanite Blue metallic, and Dravit Grey metallic. The last two tones are offered at an additional RM 9,160.

The interior trim options include as many as eight choices, ranging from various wood and aluminium trimmings. Also, available are three BMW Individual hues - ‘Fineline’ open-pore black wood, piano black, and high-gloss aluminium fabric.

BMW M Sport model traits

In Malaysia, the 4 Series Coupe is offered in a single variant option - the 430i M Sport. And so it benefits several M Sport goodies like anthracite headline, M-specific foot pedals, M leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminium Tetragon trimming finished in pearl chrome, powered driver side sports seats with memory function, seat belt with M Sport stripes, and Vernasca leather seats.

Strong safety suite

The 4 Series Coupe like all its siblings feature a strong safety shield that includes -

  • Airbags for driver and front passenger with seat-occupancy detection
  • Central locking system with electronic immobiliser and crash sensor with the closing of the window & folding of the exterior mirrors
  • Side airbags for driver and front passenger
  • Safety belts front and rear in black with M-specific stripes
  • Run-flat tyres and flat tyre indicator
  • ISOFIX child seat mounting in the rear
  • Dynamic Stability Control (with DTC, CBC, DBC, ABS with BA)
  • Head airbag front to rear
  • M Sport brake with blue painted brake callipers with M designation
  • Dynamic braking lights with flashing function

Also, part of the kit is the BMW Driving Assistant kit that comprises several useful gears like front collision warning with brake intervention, cruise control with brake function, rear collision prevention, rear cross-traffic warning, lane departure warning, and lane change warning. The Parking Assistant with a rear view camera and reversing assist comes in super handy.

BMW 4 Series Coupe’s cons -

Lack of storage

The 430i M Sport surely looks clean and modern, however, the limited storage opportunities might bother from time to time. The coupe gets a few cupholders and one dedicated phone storage area in the centre console. But beyond that, there are not too many practical options.

Shallow trunk

The boot capacity of 440-litre isn’t what one would say small, however, its narrow opening makes it difficult to get large items inside. Bulky items require a lot of manoeuvring to get in and out of the trunk.

Rear seat might feel a bit cramped

We don’t expect much from a coupe when it comes to cabin space, however, it would be nice to see a taller passenger seated comfortably. On long road trips, one might need to take breaks every now and then to stretch their leg.

Should you buy one?

For years, BMW has attracted customers in the luxury market and its new 4-Series Coupe gives customers a lot to think about. It is attractive, powerful, and handles very well. Not to forget its comfortable cabin, luxurious amenities, and advanced tech. Overall, this one is a great choice for anyone looking for a standout vehicle.
