All-new Volvo XC40 PHEV launched in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Electrification is the way forward and Volvo seems to know this fact pretty well. The automaker already has a strong PHEV lineup with models like XC60, S90, XC90, and S60 contributing a variant each. Further expanding its reach in the segment, the Volvo Malaysia lineup now includes the XC40 Recharge T5. It is a plug-in hybrid variant of the already existing XC40 compact SUV.
Where will the XC40 PHEV be assembled?
The XC40 Recharge T5 like all the Volvo models will be locally-assembled at Volvo Car Manufacturing Malaysia's plant located in Shah Alam.
How much will the XC40 Recharge T5 cost?
The new XC40 Recharge T5 price tag reads RM 241,997 (on-the-road with insurance). Thus making it pricier than the already available XC40 T5 AWD R-Design that goes for RM 231,651.
What powers the new XC40 PHEV?
Powering the 2021 XC40 Recharge T5 is a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol mill that makes 180 PS and 265 Nm. As for the electric motor that is sandwiched between the engine and the gearbox, churns out 82 PS and 160 Nm. The combined out is rated at 262 PS and 425 Nm. The power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.
The electric motor is juiced by a 10.7 kWh lithium-ion battery. Also, it is due to this very battery that the PHEV model weights (1875 kg) more than the non-PHEV trim (1,704 kg). Furthermore, the positioning of the battery is such that it does not affect the boot capacity (460litre), though the size is down by five litres.
What's the performance status?
The XC40 PHEV completes the 0 to 100 kmph sprint in 7.3 seconds. As for the compact SUV's top speed, like all the other Volvo models it is capped at 180 kmph.

Charging details?
The new XC40 PHEV uses a 3.7kW onboard AC charger and a Type 2 connector cable. When using a regular 3-pin, 2.3kW socket, one complete charge takes five hours, however, the time reduces to three hours when using a more powerful 3.7-, 7-, or 22kW charging station.
It is to be noted that Volvo is offering a XXX wall box along with every XC40 PHEV purchase.
