All-new Toyota GR Yaris fully sold out in Mexico
KUALA LUMPUR: In just a span of 24 hours, Toyota GR Yaris was declared completely sold out in Mexico. It seems like the sporty hatch is making shoppers crazy in each country it is introduced to.
It was on April 15, 2021, when Toyota Mexico opened the new GR Yaris ordering books. Priced at 699,900 pesos (roughly RM 145,000), interested customers were required to pay 20,000 pesos (RM 4,133) at the time of booking. In a mere time frame of 24 hours, all 300 units of the Toyota hot hatch found a home. The rest of the customers shifted to the waiting list.

“Mexico joins Japan, Australia, Argentina, and Spain as some of the countries that will be able to enjoy that sense of excitement that the Japanese describe as Waku Doki, because next summer it can have the exclusive GR Yaris on its streets”, said Guillermo Diaz, VP of Operations at Toyota Motor Sales Mexico. He further added, the 2021 GR Yaris “is a limited edition worthy of collectors and adrenaline lovers”.
What makes the Toyota performance hatch so amazing? Well, apart from its striking looks and feature loaded kit, it's the GR Yaris engine that appeals to many. Sitting under its hood is the largest and most powerful 3-cyl mill in production that is tipped to be the lightest and smallest 1.6-litre turbo. The bespoke G16E-GTS 1.6-litre turbo three-cylinder unit is turned with direct injection, D-4S port, and a single-scroll turbo integrated with the exhaust manifold.
With so much in its hand, the turbo unit generates a maximum power of 261 PS at 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 360 Nm from 3,000 to 4,600 rpm. The power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. On the performance front the car completes the 0 to 100 kmph sprint in 5.5 seconds and can attain a top speed of 230 kmph.
Toyota has developed a special GR-Four all-wheel drive system for the hatch. In the Normal mode, the system sends 60 percent drive to front wheels and 40 percent to the rear wheels. The Sport mode, on the other hand, has a 30:70 split. In Track mode it all dials back to 50:50, delivering maximum performance.
