7-seater Chery Tiggo 9 revealed in China

KUALA LUMPUR: The Chinese automaker Chery, which will make its re-entry in Malaysia next year, is set to unveil an all-new large-size SUV in the home market. Dubbed as the Chery Tiggo 9, the new SUV sits above the Malaysia-bound Tiggo 8 and can accommodate 5 or 7 occupants. The Ministry of Industry and Informatization of the People’s Republic of China has recently released the first images and specs of the upcoming Chery model.

Based on the brand’s T2X platform, the Chery Tiggo 9 measures 4780 mm in length, 1920 mm in width, and 1700 mm in height and carries a wheelbase of 2800 mm between the two axles.

Under the hood of the Chery Tiggo 9 lies a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine which generates a maximum power of 261 hp and a peak torque of 400 Nm. The power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, enabling the SUV to hit a top speed of 205 kmph.

In terms of design, Chery’s new SUV boasts a sizable front grille with vertical bars and an illuminated ‘Chery’ logo; which seems inspired by the Mercedes-AMG Panamericana grille. Among the other key exterior highlights are aggressive bumpers with chrome lines, striking headlights, a floating roof, a one-piece tail light cluster, retractable door handles, and 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels.

While the interior of the upcoming Chery SUV is yet to be revealed, the reports suggest an upmarket cabin loaded with several modern creature comforts like big displays, automatic air-conditioning, advanced connectivity features, and more.

More details on the Chery Tiggo 9 are likely to unfold near the launch, which is expected to happen in the first half of 2023. The SUV is anticipated to cost approximately CNY 200,000 (RM 126,912) in China.
