5 things to know about the upcoming Jaecoo J7

Exciting times are ahead for SUV enthusiasts in Malaysia as another ambitious Chinese brand is set to make its entry into the local market with two luxury SUVs. We are talking about Jaecoo, a luxury sub-brand of Chery, which will operate as a stand-alone brand in Malaysia. Last week, the automaker showcased the J7 and J8 SUVs, slated for launch in the second and fourth quarters of 2024, respectively.

In today’s article, we will be discussing 5 important things you should know about the upcoming  Jaecoo J7, so let’s get started.

Intelligent off-road SUV

Jaecoo calls the J7 an “Intelligent Off-Road SUV” as it is equipped with the unique ARDIS (All Road Drive Intelligent System) developed by the automaker. The said system combines global research and development capabilities with intelligent technology, helping drivers feel confident about handling different types of roads. It incorporates intelligent adjustments for seven major driving scenarios: urban, suburban, highways, deserts, mountains, water crossings, mud, and snow.

According to the automaker, the ARDIS system reacts fast and stays stable, offering strong performance at high speeds. The four-wheel drive system of the SUV adjusts key things like engine power and steering direction based on the road conditions, ensuring a great grip and helpful information for off-road journeys.

Intelligent cabin

The intelligent cabin of the upcoming Jaecoo J7 features an advanced 14.8-inch panoramic screen, offering entertainment and audiovisual experience. With the integrated Qualcomm 8155 flagship chipset, it offers a faster response to vehicle functions such as intelligent navigation, music playback, and voice control.

There is also an interactive W-HUD (Windshield Head-Up Display), which provides clear visibility of driving information within the driver's line of sight. The see-through chassis, on the other hand, gives a better view of the vehicle's status and navigation details, providing command over different functions of the onboard system.

The SUV is also equipped with an industry-leading 1.1 m2 large panoramic sunroof with smart open and close functions, all-sense seats with ten powerful adjustment functions, 50W wireless fast charging for cell phones, a Sony sound system, and 64-colour rhythmic ambient lights.

Five-star safety rating

The SUV has an energy-absorbing, cage-like structure with high-strength steel, ten airbags, and several advanced driver assistance systems that helped it achieve a five-star safety rating from the EU Safety Commission. 

The active safety suite includes 21 intelligent functions, including automatic emergency braking, rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic braking, adaptive cruise control, front collision warning, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, lane change assist, emergency lane keeping, intelligent evasion system, traffic jam assist, curve speed assistance, door opening warning, lead car departure notification, and park assist.

Rebadged Chery Tansuo 06

The Jaecoo J7 is a rebadged model of the Chery Tansuo 06 with unique exterior touches like a chrome-plated grille, huge bumpers, and 19-inch “Aurora-inspired” alloy wheels. The under-the-hood specification is identical to the Chery model, comprising a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The former kicks out a maximum power of 197 hp and a peak torque of 290 Nm, enabling the SUV to hit the century sprint in eight seconds.

Local assembly in Malaysia

Chery Malaysia's President and Chery International's Vice President, Shawn Xu, has confirmed that the local CKD operations will involve models from both Omoda and Jaecoo brands. The automaker is currently assembling Tiggo 8 Pro and Omoda 5 at Sime Darby’s Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah with an annual capacity of up to 20,000 units. Chery has plans to double the capacity moving forward, with the introduction of Jaecoo 7 and 8 in 2024, and the Omoda 9 in 2025.
