Art in Motion design philosophy
The upcoming Chinese SUV is Chery’s first model featuring its new design concept, called “Art In Motion.” The idea behind this bold and beautiful concept is that “a design that is functional can also be incredibly beautiful. It has to be touched and seen from outside and experienced behind the wheel.”
The borderless grille of the car boasts a flowing and integrated diamond matrix pattern, which seamlessly integrates into the split front LED headlamps and LED daytime running lights. Among the other head-turning elements of the fastback-shaped SUV are liquid-like smooth lines, a double-layer sports tail end with full-width LED tail lights, a "suspended" roof, and 18-inch sports wheels.
The brand’s latest design concept also uses colour blocking to highlight the most characterful lines creating a striking contrast. These include a strong line below the doors and accents on the slim side mirrors as well as wheels.
Dual-screen setup
Just like the exterior, the cabin of the Omoda 5 is also a treat for the eyes. One of the most highlighted breathtaking touches of the car is the Mercedes-Benz-like dual screen setup. It features two integrated and curved 10.25-inch HD digital screens (20.5-inch when combinedly measured); one is for the infotainment system offering all vehicle and entertainment features, while the other is for the digital instrument panel providing easy and intuitive controls for driving and other key settings.
Other than this modern dual-screen setup, you can also get several other creature comforts inside the Omoda 5. Some of these are intelligent voice control, in-car wireless charging, a 64-colour ambient lighting system, a 360-degree around view monitor, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay connectivity, plush-looking sport seats with headrests, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Advanced-driver assistance systems
In terms of advanced driver-assistance systems, the upcoming Omoda 5 is equipped with several active safety gears ensuring the safe travel of occupants. These include blind spot assist, rear cross traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, intelligent headlight control, and more.
“The Omoda 5’s platform also meets global 5-star safety ratings, proving that performance and adaptability do not have to come at the expense of safety or structural integrity,” said Chery.
New “future-proof” platform ready for all propulsion technologies
The Omoda 5 underpins the brand’s new “future-proof” architecture, which can accommodate every and any power source be it a pure internal combustion engine or new-generation propulsions like a hybrid, hydrogen, or electric.
In the home market, the automaker offers the SUV equipped with either a 1.6-litre TGDI engine churning out a maximum power of 197 PS and a peak torque of 290 Nm or a 1.5-litre TCI mill with156 PS and 230 Nm. As for the transmission, the choices include a 7-Speed DCT and a CVT. While Chery also has plans to roll out the Omoda 5 EV in China soon, the local spec model is likely to be powered by the 1.6-litre TGDI mill.
Competition check
The upcoming Chinese SUV measures 4,400 mm in length, 1,585 mm in height, and 1,830 mm in width, and spans a 2,630 mm long wheelbase. These dimensions and powertrain options on offer in China make the Omoda 5 a direct rival to the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V in the local market. Other strong players fighting in the same category are the Toyota Corolla Cross and Peugeot 2008.
So, those were the top five things about the upcoming Omoda 5. What do you think of it? Will it be a game-changing model or just another drop in the sea of SUVs? Let us know in the comments.
