5-star safety rating for the Perodua Aruz by ASEAN NCAP
KUALA LUMPUR: Well, we got this news good two weeks ago when Perodua announced that the Aruz received a 5-star safety from ASEAN NCAP. So, what’s new now? This time around, we have the scores this new SUV scored in every distinct test it went through. Let’s see how did the Perodua Aruz actually fare in the tests and what made the SUV attain a perfect rating of 5-stars.
For starters, the vehicle that went through all the pain was actually an Indonesian-spec Toyota Rush variant G. As the Rush already had a 5-star too, the Aruz was expected to be as good if not better, however, there are a few differences in the points scored by both the SUVs. In the adult occupant protection, the Perodua Aruz scored 43.25 points, same as the Toyota Rush. The dummy driver’s head scored full points in the frontal and side-impact crash test. In the real-life scenario though, chest and leg of the driver may sustain injuries.
Compared to the Rush’s 21.33 points, the Perodua Aruz scored 21.01 points in the child occupants protection. Compatibility of the child restraint system in the second row is the reason behind the difference in the points scored by the two SUVs in the same test. Both the Combi Malgott and Britax KidFix XP brands used by Perodua and Toyota did badly in the second-row crash test. Aruz scored low as the Combi Malgott performed worse than the KidFix XP.
In the safety assist assessment, the Perodua Aruz scored 22.22 points, which are better than 19.44 points attained by the Toyota Rush. Aruz scored more than the Rush because of the presence of Advanced Driver Assist System (ASA 2.0) on the SUV. As the Rush in the test was an Indonesian-spec model, it was missing the Pre-Collision System. The presence of the Pre-Collision System on the Rush would have brought the scores parallel to each other.
“The new Perodua SUV is based from the Toyota Rush model, which had received ASEAN NCAP rating in May 2018. Therefore, based on the documentation provided by Perodua, ASEAN NCAP has extended the Toyota Rush’s rating to Perodua Aruz,” said ASEAN NCAP. It went on to add that, “In the scoring break down, the Perodua SUV obtained most of the points the Rush had achieved, with an exception of two assessment items; Child Restraint System installation assessment at 8.19 points and Advanced Safety Assist Technologies with 2.00 points. The Perodua Aruz has the same specifications as the Toyota Rush, namely standard six airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Seatbelt Reminder System for both front and rear occupants, ISOFIX and top tether.”
The ASEAN NCAP also praised the Perodua Aruz for having Autonomous Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning. By scoring 86.49 points, ASEAN NCAP believes that the Perodua Aurz deserves to have a 5-star safety rating.
