2024 Mitsubishi Xpander facelift Malaysia: All you need to know about the soon to launch MPV

KUALA LUMPUR:  The Mitsubishi Xpander has firmly established itself as a favourite among Malaysian buyers, especially with Mitsubishi recently announcing the impressive milestone of 40,000 units sold.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What's been changed in the Xpander facelift?

Exterior refresh, interior dash refresh, same engine
  • Will there be a price hike?

    Yes, but minimal
  • What engine will it have?

    Same 1.5-litre N/A with 105PS and 141Nm
  • This stylish yet practical 7-seater MPV has resonated with many, thanks to its affordability and compact, spacious design. When the Xpander was introduced in late 2020, Mitsubishi's goal was clear: to create a vehicle that not only satisfies a wide range of customer needs but also enhances their lifestyle. Given its success among families, it’s safe to say they’ve achieved just that.

In 2022, the Xpander received a facelift, with Indonesia being one of the first markets to enjoy the updated version. However, Malaysians had to wait a bit longer, but finally, the facelifted model is set to arrive in Malaysia in just a few weeks. While the facelifted Xpander has been spotted locally, some of the details remain under wraps, but we can make educated guesses about what to expect.

Starting with the powertrain, while a hybrid version of the Xpander was showcased at the Bangkok Motor Show recently, it seems Malaysia will be receiving the standard petrol-powered model, as no hybrid badging was seen on the spotted test units.

The exterior has undergone a few noticeable changes to sharpen its look, including a bolder Dynamic Shield front design, with T-shaped lower headlights mirrored in the taillights. A more angular rear bumper with vertical reflectors and enhanced front, side, and rear skid plate inserts in black add to the facelift’s fresh appearance. New 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels round off the exterior upgrades.

    Mitsubishi Xpander dashboard design

The interior of the facelifted Xpander will likely see improvements as well, with a new horizontal dashboard design featuring a floating 9-inch infotainment touchscreen equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Expect a digital single-zone air conditioning system and an electronic parking brake to be part of the package. Another update is the new three-spoke steering wheel, replacing the outgoing model’s hexagonal center with a more modern round design.

    Mitsubishi Xpander profile rear

Under the hood, the familiar 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine remains, producing 105 PS and 141 Nm of torque, though minor tweaks such as an updated exhaust gas recirculation system could be in play.

In terms of safety, it’s unlikely there will be major changes, as the Xpander will likely continue to feature standard passive safety systems, including two airbags, traction control, and electronic brake distribution (EBD). Unfortunately, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are still not expected, unless Mitsubishi surprises us at launch.

As for pricing, we can anticipate a slight increase from the current RM101k price point, given the upgrades. Like the pre-facelift model, the Xpander facelift will likely continue to be offered in a single variant for the Malaysian market.

    2022 Mitsubishi Xpander

In conclusion, the Xpander’s ability to comfortably seat seven passengers remains one of its strongest selling points, especially with the third row offering more space than many competitors—perfect for families, especially with kids. As the facelifted version arrives, it will be interesting to see if these updates help maintain the Xpander's impressive sales momentum. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
