Hybrid engine
Powering the all-new Xpander and Xpander Cross HEVs is a series-parallel petrol-electric hybrid mill, dubbed as “e:MOTION” by the automaker. It consists of a 1.6-litre MIVEC naturally aspirated engine that generates 95 PS of maximum power at 5,100 rpm and 134 Nm of peak torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine is linked to an electric motor tuned to make 116 PS and 255 Nm. Also part of the kit is a 1.1 kWh battery pack.
“This HEV system derived from PHEVs is what made it possible to deliver both the quiet, clean ride of an EV with no fuel consumption or CO2 emissions and the convenient, comfortable ride of an HEV for enjoying long drives without concerns about remaining battery,” says Mitsubishi.
The HEVs are also equipped with two modes for EV driving (EV Priority and Charge) and five modes (Normal, Wet, Gravel, Mud, and Tarmac) for optimal drive control according to road conditions. These are mated to the Active Yaw Control (AYC), which controls the braking force and driving force and adjusts the output of the motors and engine and steering response ensuring a safe and secure driving experience across diverse weather and road conditions.
Exterior
While the Xander hybrid models bear a striking resemblance to their ICE-powered counterparts, they incorporate unique touches that lend them a distinctive appearance. These include -
- "HEV" badges on the front grille and liftgate
- "HYBRID EV" badges on the front doors
- Blue accents on the lower part of the front side, side garnishes, rear bumper, and wheels
Mitsubishi has also added a new hue to the Xpander colour palette which is “White Diamond” expressing the “clean character of the electrified vehicle.” An exclusive Green Bronze Metallic is also available for the Xpander Cross HEV.
Interior
Inside the cabin, the 2024 Mitsubishi Xpander and Xpander Cross Hybrid get a new 8.0-inch coloured digital instrument cluster showcasing information particular to the hybrid models. These include power metre indicating Eco, Power, and Charge statuses in sync with accelerator control, EV driving efficiency, and remaining battery. Drive mode changes are also displayed at the centre, allowing easy and intuitive selection on the go.
Not only that, the electrified models also benefit from a new electronic gear selector and a new steering wheel with new controls. Also part of the kit is a 9.0-inch infotainment unit, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electric parking brake with auto hold, and a 6-speaker sound system.
According to Mitsubishi, the HEV models ensure a calm driving environment with sound-absorbing and soundproofing materials strategically placed for quiet interiors during EV and engine acceleration. Further ensuring a comfortable ride is an enhanced suspension system.
Safety
As for safety, both hybrid models feature high-tensile strength steel body frames and dual front airbags. Among the other safety gears are ABS with EBD and brake assist, hill start assist, traction control, and stability control.
