2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace: Variant Analysis

The big SUVs are comfortable, can accommodate large families, and are usually considered as a status symbol. Today, we are going to talk about a big German SUV that might not be the Malaysians’ favourite but can impress the customers with its urban-focused package, German build quality, and luxury. That’s the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace offered in three variants in the local market - Life, Elegance, and R-Line 4MOTION.

The base-spec Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace Life is priced at RM 173,590 (on-the-road without insurance), while for the mid-spec Elegance and the top-spec R-Line, customers need to shell out RM 189,590 and RM 237,073, respectively. Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace Life

Exterior: This entry-level Tiguan Allspace comes equipped with a signature Volkswagen illuminated light strip on the front grille and full LED headlamps with cornering function and all-weather light. These are paired with ‘Allspace’ specification trim and unpainted bumper inserts. 

Other key exterior inclusions are silver-painted side mirrors, LED daytime running lights, dark red LED tail lights with dynamic function, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, silver anodised roof rails, electric tailgate, and 18-inch Frankfurt silver alloy wheels wrapped with 235/55 tyres.

Colours: Atlantic Blue, Oryx White, Pyrite Silver, Platinum Grey, Deep Black

Interior: Hop inside the new Tiguan Allspace Life and you will be greeted by a cabin kitted with quality materials and tech features. These include Horizon Black decorative inserts for dashboard and front door trim panels, leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, fabric upholstery, and illuminated vanity mirrors in sun visors.

Included in the tech goodies are a 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment system with voice control and Wireless App-Connect (Apple Carplay, Android Auto), Digital Cockpit, 3-zone electronic climate control, electromechanical parking brake with auto hold function, keyless vehicle entry and engine start including start/stop button. The SUV offers a segment-leading boot space of up to 1,775 litres boot space (with II and III row seats fully stored).

Engine: Powering the entry-level SUV is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that kicks out a maximum power of 150 PS from 5,000 to 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 250 Nm between 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. Sending power to the front wheels is a six-speed DSG wet dual-clutch transmission.

Safety: In terms of safety, the Tiguan Allspace is packed with six airbags (2 front, 2 front side, and 2 curtain), stability control, a cruise control system, Driver Alert System, lane keeping system, rear view camera with front and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure load indicator, ISOFIX child seats, and an anti-theft alarm system with interior monitoring protection.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace Elegance

Exterior: In the middle of the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace lineup sits the Elegance trim, which is almost similar to the Life in terms of exterior equipment. However, a few things which set it apart from the latter include an LED illuminated strip between headlights, painted bumper inserts, and an Easy Open & Easy Close sensor-controlled electric tailgate system.

Colours: Atlantic Blue, Deep Black, Platinum Grey, Pyrite Silver, Oryx White

Interior: The mid-spec Elegance is almost RM 16k pricier than the standard trim and thus comes equipped with more tech niceties. The list of the additional bits includes Active climate front seats, sports steering wheel, illuminated front door scuff plates, 8 speakers, Ambient lighting with 5 preset themes, 12-way electric front seats with memory and powered lumbar support, and safety-optimised head restraints. Also, the seats are wrapped in Vienna leather.

Engine: just like the Life, the Elegance variant is also powered by a 150 PS/250 Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Safety: As for safety, Volkswagen does not offer any additional gear with the mid-spec Elegance.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace R-Line 4MOTION

Exterior: Compared to the lower variants, the Tiguan Allspace R-Line gets a more aggressive R-Line exterior styling with chrome accents, alongside the bigger 19-inch “Valencia” alloy wheels wrapped with 255/45 tyres and fake quad tailpipes.

Colours: Atlantic Blue, Oryx White, Pyrite Silver, Platinum Grey, Deep Black 

Interior: Inside, the SUV benefits from R-Line styling, a premium 10-speaker, 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and fake carbon fibre trim over and above the features available in the lower trims.

Engine: The R-Line is powered by a larger 2.0-litre mill that delivers 220 PS of maximum power from 4,500 to 6,200 rpm and 350 Nm of peak torque between 1,500 and 4,400 rpm. The engine is tied with a seven-speed DSG, 4Motion all-wheel drive, and Dynamic Chassis Control with Driving Mode Selection.

Safety: Safety wise, the R-Line is equipped similarly to the two other Allspace variants with an additional airbag (driver knee), and hill descent control.
