The Toyota Veloz comes with a more premium exterior design and better-equipped cabin compared to the 2022 Perodua Alza.Similarities
Same platform
The new Alza and Veloz are based on the same platform i.e, Daihatsu New Global Architecture. It is a unibody/monocoque base, which is more sophisticated than the utilitarian rear-wheel drive ladder frame architecture. The architecture features more rigid unibody construction and is coupled with MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear, promising a more comfortable and competent ride to the occupants.
Same engine and transmission
Powering the upcoming MPVs is a 2NR-VE 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, the same unit that powers the ongoing Perodua Myvi. While there is no information about the output levels, we can take reference from the top-selling hatchback’s unit. Under the hood of the Myvi, the said engine delivers a maximum power of 103 PS of power and a peak torque of 137 Nm.
Perodua has confirmed that the Alza’s mill is an EEV-rated unit with promising fuel consumption of 22 kmpl, touted as the best in its class.
As for the transmission, you will get the same D-CVT unit with both MPVs that sends power to the front wheels. That’s Daihatsu’s new dual-mode Constantly Variable Transmission, which offers faster acceleration and improved fuel consumption.
Same ADAS pack
Both models come with a strong safety shield powered by several advanced driver-assistance features. With the new Alza, you get the Perodua Smart Drive Assist, comprising an Advanced Safety Assist, Driver Assist, Parking Assist, and Headlamp Assist. Included in the ASA are pre-collision warning, pre-collision assist brake, mis-pedal operational control and front departure alert. Parts of the Driver Assist and Parking Assist are lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, adaptive cruise control, lane keep control, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, 360-degree panoramic view monitor, and parking sensors.
On the other hand, the Veloz is kitted with Toyota Safety Sense which is expected to be identical to the Alza’s Perodua Smart Drive Assist with a pre-collision system and adaptive cruise control as confirmed features.
Not to forget, both MPVs are equipped with six airbags as standard.
Same interior tech
When it comes to interior specs, the similarities you can find are a seven-inch digital instrument display, an electronic parking brake with auto brake hold, and a 9.0-inch freestanding infotainment display.
Same boot capacity
With third-row seats folded, the new Alza and Veloz, both offer the same boot space of 498 litres that can accommodate various types of loads. However, it restricts to 137 litres with all seats in place, in the case of the Alza.
Differences
The exterior design of the MPVs is different as they carry distinctive front grille signatures, along with unique headlights and tail lights. The Veloz features a more premium design with a chrome stripe on the front and LEDs all around. It also rides on bigger 17-inch wheels whereas the Perodua SUV comes fitted with 15 or 16-inch units.
Inside the cabin, the Veloz is better equipped as compared to the Alza, which justifies its higher price tag. The features you get only with the Toyota MPV are Qi wireless charging pad, Apple CarPlay connectivity, and ambient lighting. A soft-touch dashboard comes with Veloz, in place of the hard plastic you will find inside the new Alza.
In terms of colour choices, Perodua offers five options, including new Elegant Black, new Vintage Brown, Ivory White, Glittering Silver, and Garnet Red. The Toyota Veloz, on the contrary, can be purchased in either White, Red Metallic, Metallic Bluish Black, Silver Metallic, and Blue Metallic. Exclusive to Malaysia is an option of contrasting black roof available with the latter two, which costs the buyers an additional RM 1,300.
