2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace gets bolder looks and updated tech

KUALA LUMPUR: First introduced in 2017, the second-gen Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is the brand’s best-selling model in the US market, where it has just received its mid-life facelift. The refreshed model hosts new styling and technology that aims to elevate its compelling blend of utility and performance.

“The 2022 Tiguan represents a strong refresh for one of our best-selling SUVs,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President for Product Marketing and Strategy. “It boasts sportier exterior styling, attainable technology, and competitive driver assistance feature deployment.”

Getting into the details, the new Tiguan Allspace gets a new front fascia with sharper angles and larger air intakes as compared to the outgoing model. The slimmer LED headlights and DRLs are now standard, however, the customers can also opt for an illuminated light bar running across the grille, just like the electric ID.4.

The R-Line trim now has restyled sporty bumpers, sportier side sills, and a new ‘R’ badge on the front fender. You can also notice the new tail lights and a model badge on the tailgate that has a new font styling used on the recently unveiled Taos and Polo. The redesigned rims are also a part of the facelift; the size ranges from 17- to 20-inches.

Volkswagen also added two new exterior colors - Kings Red and Oryx White, making a total of eight colors to choose from.

Inside the cabin, the new Tiguan Allspace boasts an all-new steering wheel with switches featuring touch-sensitive controls and piano-black finishing. Also, the new Climatronic air-conditioning panel now has touch-sensitive controls in place of dials and buttons.

Unlike the outgoing model, the 8-inch instrument screen is now standard across all variants, while a 10.25-inch unit is available as an option. For the infotainment system, Volkswagen brings onboard the latest MIB3 operating system, carrying additional connected services. Other notable features are wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Harman/Kardon premium sound system, heated and ventilated leather seats, 15-colour ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.

As far as the mechanical setup is concerned, the 2021 VW Tiguan Allspace is fitted with the same 2.0-lite four-cylinder TSI engine generating a maximum power of 184 hp and a peak torque of 300 Nm. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox as the only option for power transmission, while the 4Motion all-wheel-drive setup is optional across the board.

In terms of safety, Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE suite of advanced driving aids is now available with the refreshed Tiguan Allspace. It includes Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go. A semi-autonomous drive mode called ‘Travel Assist’ is also introduced with the new model.

The all-new Tiguan Allspace is set to hit the US showrooms in July this year, while the deliveries in Europe are expected to start from October. Regarding launch in Malaysia, no clues are available as of now, but as right-hand drive cars usually come late, we expect a longer waiting time.
