2021 Volkswagen Golf teased again ahead of launch in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf also known as Golf MK8 made its global debut in February 2020 and now after a long wait, it is set to hit the Malaysian shores. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has opened a registration of interest page for the new Golf on its website. It will be available in two variants here - Golf GTI and Golf R-Line locally assembled at Pekan, Pahang.

Volkswagen Malaysia has not yet revealed the new Golf Mk8 price, however, we can expect it to be lower than the imported Mk7.5 version.While the automaker has not yet announced anything on the new Golf Mk8 price, we can expect it to be lower than the imported Mk7.5 version. However, the upgrades will add to the prices. For reference, the Mk7.5 Golf GTI was last priced at RM 238,857 (on-the-road without insurance and inclusive of SST rebate), while the 1.4 TSI retailed at RM 168,505.
The automaker recently posted a new teaser of the Golf GTI on its social media, featuring the performance-focused compact car in red attire. It also shows off some of the upgraded equipment of the car, including an IQ.Light system and a pair of 18-inch “Richmond” alloy wheels. The new Golf R-Line MK8, on the other hand, will be fitted with the same IQ.Light system and 17-inch “Valencia” alloys, as shown in the previous teaser.
Both variants of the 2022 Volkswagen Golf will also have a fully digital instrument cluster and a MIB3-powered 10-inch infotainment head unit.
Under the bonnet, the latest Golf GTI is likely to be equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine generating a maximum power output of 245 hp at 5,000 rpm and a peak torque of 370 Nm from 1,600 rpm. On the contrary, the new Golf R-Line is expected to get the energy from a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder generating 130 PS and 200 Nm of torque. As for the transmission, both engines are likely to be paired with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox in Malaysia.
