This means, no more ongoing Fortuner for you, the dealerships will stock the new version that's said to be accompanied by several major improvements in the design and equipment front.
Speaking of upgrades, today we'll be discussing how different the new Fortuner compared to the ongoing model. We also hear the facelifted Fortuner is a bit pricey, making the new vs old all the more important. So, let's get started with the 2021 Fortuner price & variant details.
Toyota Fortuner: New vs Old - Variants & Price
As per the information uploaded by Toyota Malaysia, the 2021 Fortuner will be offered in the three trim options - starting with the base 2.4 AT 4x4, mid-spec 2.7 SRZ AT 4X4, and lastly the range-topping 2.8 VRZ AT 4X4.
Note, the Fortuner 2.4 AT 4X4 model is limited to Labuan, Sabah, and Sarawak.
The ongoing model, on the other hand, is also offered in three variant options - 2.4 AT 4X4, 2.4 VRZ AT, and 2.7 SRZ AT 4x4.
So, no more 2.4 VRZ AT models for 2021, however, it's the all-new 2.8 VRZ AT 4X4 trim that we are excited about.

Overall, the new Toyota Fortuner price is hiked and the reason is the upgrades the SUV has received.
Toyota Fortuner: New vs Old - Engine
The 2021 Toyota Fortuner is offered in three trims, all powered by a different set of engines. Though nothing is confirmed at the moment we think base 2.4 AT 4X4 and mid-sped 2.7 SRZ AT 4X4 runs on the same unit as the ongoing model So, the former gets a 2393-cc diesel engine that delivers 150 PS and 400 Nm, and the latter a 2694 cc petrol mill pumping out 166 PS and 245 Nm.
What Toyota Malaysia has confirmed, however, is the new 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine that powers the range-topping 2.8 VRZ A/T 4X4 trim. It churns out a maximum power of 204 PS at 3,400 rpm and a peak torque of 500 Nm from 1,600 to 2,800 rpm.
The ongoing model is offered with two engine options - 2.4-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol.
Toyota Fortuner: New vs. Old - Design
The new Fortuner surely looks better-off compared to the ongoing model. The automaker has made a lot of design changes, especially at the SUVs front facia. For instance, it now gets a new grille with wavy inserts, flanked by Quad-LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights. The bumper is also revised and it gets massive side air intakes. The fog lamp casing is also different - sleeker than before. Adding glam to the SUVs face are the eye-catching Sequential LED turn indicators.
Though nothing is official, from the looks of it, it seems the new Fortuner stands on 18-inch alloys that shows-off striking cut-work design. We also see roof rails, side skirts, and ORVMs with indicators.
The rear features a roof spoiler with brake lights, wrap-around LED tail lights, the L-shaped casing for rear fog lamps.
Toyota Fortuner: New vs. Old - Interior
The look and feel of the cabin mostly remain the same as before - from what we have seen and heard. The new Fortuner is also said to carry forward the dashboard. However, fret not, there are a bunch of improvements on the equipment front.
Here are a few we are sure about -
- Variable Flow Control Power Steering
- Wireless Charger for Qi compliant devices
- Infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity
- Vehicle Telematics System
- Luxurious Ambient Illumination
- Kick-sensor power tailgate
Toyota Fortuner: New vs Old - Safety
Toyota Malaysia has not cleared the air around the new Fortuner's safety profile fully. However, we do know that the SUV will enjoy the benefits of the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of safety and driver-assist features. The TSS here includes Pre-collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Alert with Yaw Assist.
The ongoing model clearly misses out on these amazing safety features.
Toyota Fortuner: New vs. Old - Conclusion
The 2021 Toyota Fortuner is clearly a major improvement over the ongoing model. And the extra price clearly makes for the design and equipment upgrades.
