2021 Proton Iriz: Pros, cons, and should you buy one?
First introduced in 2014, the Proton Iriz hatchback has a huge fan base that is increasing with each passing year. To boost its sales, even more, the automaker recently gave it an update that involves notable design enhancements, and new tech bits. The new Proton Iriz is offered in three trims - 1.3 Standard, 1.6 Executive, and 1.6 Active. The price for the base version starts at RM 40,300 (on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of the SST rebate) and goes all the way up to RM 54,000 for the full bells & whistles Active trim.
Undoubtedly, the recent facelift made the hatch a far better deal than what it used to be, but it does miss out on some important aspects. Here, we have listed the Proton Iriz pros and cons that might help you in deciding whether you should buy it or not.
Proton Iriz Pros
Exterior styling
On the exterior, the hatchback looks stylish and sportier with new styling touches. These include refreshed front grille and bumper, all-around body mouldings, LED headlamps with auto on/off and follow me home functions, 16-inch alloy wheels, and a black roof finish.
Impressive connectivity features
On the connectivity front, the new Proton Iriz plays strong with its new 8-inch floating infotainment touchscreen unit which is mated to the Geely Key User Interface and an eSIM for online music streaming navigation and weather forecasts. It also supports 4G & WiFi smartphone & Bluetooth connectivity and an updated “Hi Proton” voice control system. With the latter, you can now control the AC and driver’s window along with controlling navigation, music, and communication. Also part of the kit are 6 USB ports (3 on the front, 2 on the back, and one behind the rearview mirror).
Comfy interior
The new Proton Iriz is also packed with a number of comfort-imparting elements such as an intelligent entry with a push start button, a leatherette steering wheel with controls for audio and calls, a TFT multi-info display, semi leather comfortable seats, front armrest with a storage box, power windows, and N95 cabin filter.
Punchy engine
Proton offers the Iriz in two engine options - a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder in-line 16 Valve DOHC, VVT engine. which kicks out a maximum power of 95 PS at 5750 rpm and a peak torque of 120 Nm at 4,000 rpm. This engine powers the base variant while the higher ones take their energy from a bigger 1.6-litre 4-cylinder in-line 16 Valve DOHC, VVT mill generating 109 PS at 5750 rpm and 105 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm.
As for the transmission, there is no manual option available with the new Iriz and thus all versions are paired with a Continuous Variable Transmission system sending power to the front wheels.
5-star safety rating
ASEAN NCAP has recently awarded the 2021 Iriz with a five-star safety rating, and the credit goes to its reinforced body structure and several active & passive safety features. It comes with a minimum of four airbags as standard while the top-spec version is fitted with 6 airbags. Included in the safety kit are an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake distribution system, brake assist, electronic stability control, hill hold assist, traction control system, four parking sensors, reverse camera, seat belt reminder system, ISOFIX, and top tether fitment.
Proton Iriz cons
Interior Space
When it comes to interior space, the facelifted Proton Iriz is average in the segment especially considering its exterior dimensions. The rear seat does not offer enough space to fit in three full-sized adults; tall individuals might also feel cramped compared to ones who are smaller-sized. The under-thigh support of the back seat is also less than the front.
Material quality
Another acute disappointment is the material quality. While seats and armrest are wrapped in leather, the material used for the dashboard, door panels, etc is still hard plastic. However, it depends on the price point, but, it’d have been nice if the upgrade brought along some high-grade materials into the cabin.
Should you buy one?
The new Proton Iriz is certainly an urban hatchback with stylish looks, a feature-rich interior, and a spirited performance. Those who don’t worry much about the interior material quality and space, and need a safe car in the given price range can go for this.
