2021 Mercedes-Benz electric SUV EQA spied ahead of its debut later this year
KUALA LUMPUR: The German automaker Mercedes-Benz is set to debut its all-electric EQA later this year. Spy photos caught the model being tested with minimal camouflage.
EQA model is an addition to the small SUV segment and is planning to conquer global markets by the end of this year. This new piece from the luxury automaker has recently completed its winter testing, somewhere near Sweden’s Arctic falls. At such extreme temperatures, they paid attention to cold-climate charging and how the sub-freezing temperatures affect the thermal management of the battery and interior of the car. For inspection of energy recovery and traction, the prototype model was run on snow-covered roads.
The EQA will enter the Mercedes-Benz line-up as an electric alternative to the GLA small SUV, built on the same MFA II platform as the A-Class, B-Class, GLA, GLB, and CLA variants.
From the outside look, the EQA appears almost identical to the 2020 GLA, although it is likely to feature a number of unique EV-specific styling also.
Revealing some technical details of EQA, the automaker pointed out that it will be a dual-motor EV with a possible maximum torque of more than 368 pound-feet, a 0-to-60 time of approximately 5 seconds and a maximum range of 250 miles.
There is not much talk in the town about the technical intricacies and sales targets planned for this EQA. We, however assume the production to start much later this year because big batteries require further planning, as seen with most electric cars.
Taking a glance at the spy shots, the EQA is originally seen as this awesome 3-door coupe-hatch. We loved the shape but it will be interesting to see if this gains popularity among customers with preferred crossover choices. Also, EV customers make educated purchases and to grab their attention, driving range is important.
Mercedes has also confirmed a lineup of plug-in hybrids that will launch under the EQ Power sub-brand at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. The EQA is expected to be revealed at a major Motor Show by the end of 2020 and we are still awaiting an official announcement on that.
