2021 IAA Mobility: Mercedes-Benz previews the Concept EQG
KUALA LUMPUR: The 2021 IAA Mobility, aka, the Munich Motor Show is going in full swing and is witnessing several global premiers. Some big names are even coming from Mercedes-Benz and now joining the list is the Concept EQG, a mear-production study of an all-electric G-Class.
Markus Schäfer, member of the board of management of Daimler AG and COO of Mercedes-Benz Cars said, “Wherever market conditions permit, Mercedes-Benz will be ready to go fully electric by the end of the decade.” He further added, “With this strategic step from ‘electric first’ to ‘electric only’, including sustainable production and the CO2-neutral life cycle of our batteries, we are accelerating the transformation to a zero-emission and software-driven future. We want to inspire our customers to switch to electric mobility with convincing products. An icon like the G-Class fulfils this task perfectly.”
So, let’s see what the Concept EQG has on offer, starting with its design language.
Concept EQG Exterior
- It showcases a regular G-Class angular silhouette with several distinctive touches and serious cyberpunk vibes
- Instead of a front grille, there is a black panel with rounded squares within and an illuminated border
- The headlamps look stylish too with additional garnish and illumination
- The grille is followed by a slim intake, next up the lower apron with inlets sporting a squircle mesh design
- Several illuminated elements can be seen throughout its body, like circles on the ORVMs, side strips, and border of the lockable storage space
- Speaking of the rear storage box that’s usually where the spare wheel goes is lockable and can be used to store charging cables and more
- The 22-inch polished aluminium alloy wheels are hard to ignore
- The flat roof rack in a high-gloss black tone features a centrally shaped ‘G’ and a thin LED light strip
- The vehicle looks striking with the two-tone paint finish - gloss back on top and glass aluminium on the button
Concept EQG Interior
Well, no luck here. Mercedes-Benz has not revealed any interior shots of the EQG, however, we expect the cabin to be awe-striking just like the exterior with several illuminating bits here and there. Overall, it will look like the regular G-Class with some EQ clues.
Concept EQG Mechanicals
- Mercedes latest concept is built on the same ladder-frame construction as the regular G-Class
- On the suspension front is present - an independent setup at the front axel and a tweaked rigid rear axel for the integration of the electric drive system
- Speaking of the electric drive system, it includes four electric motors located near the wheels and individually controlled. As per the automaker, the car’s off-road reduction can be activated via a shiftable two-speed gearbox
Overall, it can be said that an electric drive system is beneficial for an off-roader. Why? While the batteries integrated into the ladder frame result in a low centre of gravity, the electric motors instant torque delivery help with controllability and pulling power.
