2020 Honda Odyssey gets revised design & new features

KUALA LUMPUR: Honda has unveiled the facelifted Odyssey in Japan. It is the second time the fifth-gen model of the MPV has received a refreshed look, with the first one coming out in 2017.

The 2020 Odyssey comes with a lot of improvements both on the styling and feature front. Starting with the former, the new Odyssey showcases a more upright front profile, a flatter bonnet, and more imposing cuts and creases. Besides, the car now gets a clear distinction between upper and lower intake, with the former getting chrome horizontal slates.

Part of the Odyssey revised styling kit is 'jewel eye' headlights, LED strips on the lower apron, and well-defined creases on the bumper. The side profile remains the same as the current model with no major changes. As for the MPVs rear end, it gets new tail lamps with revised lighting graphics. Mimicking the front, the rear also gets a thin chrome strip running across the tailgate and splits the cluster.

On the inside, the MPV now gets a new dashboard design that incorporates slim air-con vents with striking decorative trim above providing the cabin with a premium look and feel. There's also an additional storage space hidden underneath this premium trim.

Other changes include -

  • 7-inch instrument display
  • 10-inch touchscreen head unit
  • 2nd-row captain chairs
  • Removable 3rd-row seat for more storage space
  • New retractable driver side drink holder
  • Gesture control power sliding doors
  • Reserve lock (MPV self-lock tech)
  • Hands-free power-operated tailgate

In Japan, Honda is offering the 2020 Odyssey in two engine options - a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine making 175 PS at 6,200 rpm and 225 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The said powerplant is paired to a CVT unit with front- and all-wheel drive options on offer. Next up is a 145 PS and 175 Nm 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle four-pot with Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid system, widely known as e:HEV. The system also gets a lithium-ion battery that powers a front-mounted electric motor making 184 PS and 315 Nm.

Apart from styling and cabin features, the 2020 Odyssey gets an upgraded safety kit that now includes an improved Honda Sensing suite. The said suit is standard across the Odyssey range that now includes false start suppression when reversing. Besides, part of the kit is lane departure alert, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist.

The all-new Honda Odyssey price range for petrol models starts from 3.495 million yen and goes to 3.9294 million yen (RM 156,515). As for the Odyssey e:HEV trims, its price starts from 4.198 million yen to 4.58 million yen (RM 167,214 to RM 182,429).
