2019 Perodua Axia - Details, specs, price and more
In August of this year, Perodua announced that it is opening its order books for the all-new 2019 Axia. Just over a month after that, in September, the Malaysia automaker officially unveiled the latest iteration of the top-selling Axia. While there have been several leaks on the interweb that allowed all of us to take a glimpse or two of the new 2019 Perodua Axia, the real deal is here.
The Perodua Axia has now been on sale in Malaysia since September 2014, and in all that time, has gone on to become one of the country’s most popular and well-liked cars. The A-segment hatchback was introduced as a replacement for the erstwhile Viva, which was a pretty successful model in its own right. Buyers were quickly drawn to the showroom floors, attracted mainly by the Axia’s more urbane design, fuel-efficient powertrain and affordable price tag.
Given its increasing popularity among the masses, Perodua decided to give the Axia its first facelift in 2017, which only made it an even better deal. However, as time went on, the Axia had to contend with some strong rivals - the list includes the likes of the Kia Picanto and the facelifted Proton Saga. This meant that Perodua could no longer rest on its laurels and had to come up with a strategy to thwart off the two-pronged threat. This is where the birth of the all-new 2019 model was finalised.
While its immediate rivals are worthy adversaries, they mostly can’t match up to the speed at which Perodua Axias leave the showroom floors -- little surprise there as it really is the most affordable new car in the country. So, what makes the Perodua Axia such a stellar hit with audiences in the region? Well, to answer that, let’s start things off with the most important aspect of the 2019 Axia, its price.
2019 Perodua Axia price details:
2019 Perodua Axia variants | 2019 Perodua Axia price |
E MT (Solid and Metallic) | RM 24,090 |
G AT (Solid and Metallic) | RM 33,490 |
GXTRA AT (Solid and Metallic) | RM 34,990 |
STYLE AT (Solid and Metallic) | RM 38,890 |
SE AT (Solid and Metallic) | RM 38,890 |
AV AT (Solid and Metallic) | RM 43,190 |
With prices for the bare-bones variant starting at just a smidge over 24,000 ringgit, the 2019 Perodua Axia is undeniably light on the wallet. Even the fully-optioned AV variant with the automatic gearbox can be had for around 43,000 ringgit. In comparison, its nearest Kia rival’s price range of between RM 49,888 to RM 59,888 sounds quite high, indeed. On the other hand, the 2019 Perodua Axia’s closest Malaysian competitor, the Proton Saga, costs from between RM 32,800 to RM 39,800.
For your money, the 2019 Perodua Axia will come with a 5-year/150,000-kilometre (whichever comes first) comprehensive manufacturer's warranty. Customers of the 2019 Axia can also opt for various GearUp accessories at the dealership, including a rear spoiler, door visors, seat covers, chrome scuff plates and even sun shades.
Most of these items are sold by Perodua as individual packages, whose cost can range from RM 330 to RM 980. However, the prices for all GearUp accessories come included with a 6-month warranty for that extra sense of security. For added convenience, customers can choose to pay for these packages using an instalment plan as well.
The 2019 Perodua Axia is available in five different colours; these are Ivory White Solid, Glittering Silver Metallic, Lava Red Metallic, Midnight Blue Metallic and Sunrise Orange Metallic. Among these colours, the entry-level (E) variant of the 2019 Axia is only sold in Ivory White, while the G variant can’t be had in Lava Red Metallic. The sporty-looking Style variant also doesn’t get this red paint, but it does come with its own special Sunrise Orange Metallic paint.

In terms of its overall exterior size and proportions, the new 2019 Perodua Axia looks vastly similar to its pre-facelift predecessor. The nation’s top automaker found it prudent to not alter their best-selling hatchback’s size by much, except for one exception. Among all the six variants of the 2019 Axia, the Style trim comes across as a slightly larger variant, and there is a good explanation behind that.
You see, automakers are well aware that almost every Jack and Jill hunting for their next new car wants at least a light drizzle of the much-loved ‘crossover’ potion; even in an A-segment city car such as this. Therefore, the newly-introduced Style variant of the 2019 Perodua Axia does exactly that, or at least tries to. Thanks to a few additions and adjustments on the outside, the Axia Style boasts an extra 5 mm to its overall length, 5 mm to its width and it now stands 15 mm taller at the roof.
2019 Perodua Axia exterior
When it was first introduced back in 2014, it was quite easy to spot the visual differences between each variant of the Perodua Axia. This was primarily accomplished by making the lower variants of the hatchback to look pretty standard and mellow, while the higher trims were styled to look more shouty and sporty in appearance. However, with the introduction of the new 2019 Axia, Perodua has decided to go down a different road.
There is no longer a completely different design theme between the lower and upper variants of the Axia, as all the differences are in the nitty-gritty of the trim levels. So if you have been expecting some radical design alterations between the older and newer models, this might not be it. However, that doesn’t mean that the Malaysian automaker has left the car completely untouched.
While entry-level variants look almost identical to the pre-facelift model, the SE variant of the 2019 Axia can be told apart from its lower trims courtesy of the red stripes on its front grille and on the front and rear bumper. Moreover, the SE variant also gets distinctive and observably sizeable side skirts. Of course, the most easily identifiable member of the 2019 Perodua Axia family is the newly-introduced Style variant. The 2019 Axia Style stands out quite effortlessly when placed next to other Axia variants.
One of the biggest reasons for this is its attractive Sunrise Orange Metallic paint scheme, which suits this car quite well. Then there are its other obvious differences, most of which are a result of its wannabe crossover ambitions; these can be clearly seen from its adoption of beefier front & rear bumpers, more aggressive front grille with carbon-textured inserts, sportier side skirts, black (faux) roof rails, larger 15-inch alloy wheels shod with fatter 175-section rubber, black lower body cladding, and a sporty-looking rear roof-mounted spoiler among a few other bits.
2019 Perodua Axia interior
The design and layout of the interior of the new 2019 Perodua Axia remains mostly unchanged over its predecessor, especially when it comes to its lower variants. It is still a practical and relatively spacious place to be in, and ergonomics are fairly well calibrated too. The dashboard and steering wheel on the new Axia GXtra variant feature silver accents to jazz up the mood in the cabin, while the seats are covered with a better quality fabric over lower trims.
Stepping up to the Style variant, the 2019 Axia now gains silver accents on the door armrests, while there is chrome on the inner door handles and a little bit on the centre console as well. The new semi-bucket seats, while still covered in fabric, are now sporting a trendy-looking, black denim-style fabric of a higher quality when compared to that found in the GXtra variant. Meanwhile, the instrument cluster now uses white backlight instead of the orange illumination found on the GXtra.
The 2019 Axia’s SE variant gets splashes of red all over the interior. For example, on the circular aircon vents, centre stack surrounds, on the base of the seats which also sport contrast red stitching. The door panels on the SE variant also get some fabric coating for added comfort. Finally, the range-topping AV variant comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, piano black finish on the centre stack, a touchscreen head unit, plus a little dash of chrome on top of the gear lever, side aircon vents and centre cluster.
Compared to its predecessors, the 2019 Perodua Axia’s interior should now feel quieter as engineers have added more insulating materials to reduce the overall NVH. While the quality of materials in the Axia isn’t as good as those found in the Kia Picanto, for the price, the 2019 Axia definitely scores better than it ever did in the past.

2019 Perodua Axia performance

The unit produces 67 hp and 91 Nm, and drives the front wheels via either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed auto ‘box. While the Axia can only do around 155 kmph before running out of steam, this frugal hatchback can manage a claimed best of 22.5 kmpl for the manual and at least 20.8 kmpl for the automatic.
Conclusion
With the 2019 Axia, Perodua has improved a few aspects of a car that was already selling by the truck loads. While competition is tough, the Perodua Axia comes out as an extremely well-priced, easy-to-drive, efficient and decently-packaged city car.
