Toyota gives Avanza ‘X’ treatment - Is it worth the additional cost?

Toyota Avanza is an MPV that’s been around in the Malaysian market for long, and it was about time for it to receive some significant tweaks. It was in February first week that UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd introduced the new Avanza with 'X' treatment. The said X-factor is already enjoyed by three Toyota family members - Camry, Innova, and Vios.

Wait, before you built any assumptions about the newly added Avanza trim, as its X treatment differs from that of the models above. The new Toyota Avanza X, unlike others, gets a more rugged look in appearance. Also, with a few added set of features, it is priced above all the existing Avanza line-up.

However, we need to figure, is Avanza X new sporty appearance worth the revised price tag? Let’s find out -

A revised front & rear fascia

One thing that’s worth complimenting is Toyota Avanza X looks, the car effortlessly stand-out against the on-going variants and Toyota has undoubtedly put-in efforts on improving its style quotient. Starting of the front, it gets a new bumper spoiler with moulding that houses fog lamp casing with new LED underling. The rear too holds an admiring glance with the newly added bumper spoiler with moulding and how can we forget the revised combination reflectors. Sliding our way to the side, it’s the over-fender black casing that got our attention, not only is appealing, it adds value too. The casing reduces the visible tyre and wheel arch gap and also gives protection from the road debris thrown up by wheels during the ride. Also, contributing to the muscular and functionality portion is the new slid cladding that looks amazing and side-by-side protects Avanza bodywork.

All the additions mentioned above come as standard with the new X badge. However, for clients with bigger appetite, Toyota has on-board optional accessories to further enhance the rugged appeal - the 16-inch alloy rim and a roof ornament.

Cabin comfort

Toyota is known to build automobiles infused with features that work towards improving passengers comfort. Avanza X is no exception to the trend and provides a comfortable atmosphere making every ride stress free and enjoyable. In addition to Avanza’s standard list of offerings, the X trim features dual-blower air-conditioning system. Further, ensuring all rows get a similar cooling effect, second set of blowers are placed on the ceiling.

Features to impress

The new X trim offers all the features provided in other Avanza variants, so there’s nothing new here that’ll catch your attention. However, you can add more features to your Avanza X, as Toyota is offering optional features like - DVD-AVN System with DVD player with 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone connectivity, internet browser, WiFi, HDMI, Bluetooth, reverse camera, navigation and voice recognition and DVD-AVX System with DVD player with 6.1-inch touch screen, reverse camera, AUX jack, MP3, tuner, Bluetooth, USB and SD card slot.

Safety and security

Talking about occupants safety, Toyota has integrated all Avanza variants with same features like ABS, reverse sensor, GOA body, ISOFIX, SRS driver and passenger airbag, and 3-point ELR seatbelts in all the rows. There's also a collapsible steering column function that is not available in the 1.5E (AT) trim.

Engine

The newly added X trim bowers its under the hood configuration from its sibling. It features the same 1.5-litre 4-CYL in-line, 16-valve DOHC, chain drive with Dual VVT-i that delivers 105 PS of power and 136 Nm of torque.

Peace of mind

Like all Toyota cars, the Avanza X comes with an unlimited mileage and 5-year warranty. Also, the next owner can enjoy the warranty benefits falling within the initial 5-year ownership term.

The Avanza 1.5X hold a price tag starting from RM 82,700 and would be available for viewing at all dealerships from 24th February. With a slightly higher price tag, the X trim offers a rugged exterior, and in all the other zones (interior, safety, and engine) it's a carbon copy of the sibling trims.

So, if you are someone who is into looks, its a good option for you, as its rugged appeal is good enough to turn heads. Else, you can give it a miss, save a few thousand and opt for a non-X Avanza variant.
