Top MPVs to buy under RM 90k

Multi-purpose vehicles may not appeal many with their standard and mostly similar looks, but truth be said they are the holy grail for big families. These cars come with the ability to commute seven people at once and can be even converted to load carriers when needed. Next best thing about them is that they provide good fuel-efficiency that cars with a similar price tag might not offer. However, it is to be noted that these vehicles miss out on raw engine power, rough road ability, ground clearance, and value practicality over looks.

So, if you are in for the deal and want to grab a good, reliable car that can easily accommodate your big family, there are a few options. However, if you prefer power, want four-wheel capability, big tyres to ride over tough terrains then SUV is the segment you should be looking at.

As the heading suggests, here we’ll be presenting top MPVs up for grab in the Malaysian market and that too under RM 90k.

1. 2019 Toyota Avanza

At the top of our list is the one and only Toyota Avanza. And now that Toyota has launched the latest model you are in for a great deal with modern features and looks. The car is available in three trim options - 1.5 E for RM 80,000, 1.5S for RM 83,888, and lastly 1.5S+ for RM 87,888. All the Avanza trims are powered by a 2NR-VE 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. This mill produces 105 PS at 6000 rpm along with 136 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. The engine is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission system that sends power to the rear wheels.

Part of new Avanza specs sheet are features like - digital manual air-con system, and double-DIN head unit. The range-topping variant gets a 6.75-inch Display Audio touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice recognition system, and a reverse camera. The MPVs safety kit includes dual front airbag, two ISOFIX anchors, ABS with EBD. The 1.5S+ gets blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert.

2. Nissan Grand Livina

It was only recently that Nissan gave the Grand Livina a design update that gave the MPV a fresh breeze of life. This MPV is offered in three trims - 1.6L M/T, 1.6L A/T, and 1.8L A/T. While the base and mid-range variants are powered by a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder 105 PS and 153 Nm, the range-topping houses a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder unit that churns out 126 PS and 178 Nm. On the transmission front, you can pick between a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission unit for the first two trims, however, the top one gets a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Nissan Grand Livina specs sheet includes a multi-function steering wheel, dual pod instrument console with MID screen, 2-DIN music system, chrome grille, large triangular headlamps, large trapezoidal tail lamps, and OVRMs with turn indicators. On the safety front, the car gets dual airbags and ABS with EBD and BA.

3. Chery Eastar

Here’s a contender from China, the Chery Eastar. This seven-seater MPV has gained a lot of name for itself in the market and is known for its compact structure and spacious cabin. In the Malaysian market, the car is available in two variants options - Chery Easter and Chery Easter ST. Both these trims are powered by a 1,971cc 4-cylinder mill that generates a maximum power of 134 hp along with a peak torque of 180 Nm. The mill is coupled to a 4-speed automatic gearbox and delivers a mileage of 14 kmpl.

Priced at RM 81,502, the Easter gets a pretty basic feature list that includes automatic climate control, power windows, dash-integrated infotainment system, electrically-adjustable ORVM, keyless entry, leather-wrapped steering wheel, electric sunroof, and leather upholstery. The MPV has also received 4-star safety rating from NCAP, all thanks to its safety kit that packs dual front airbag, ABS with EDB, crumple zones, and ABS and EBD.

5. 2019 Proton Exora

When out on MPV shopping, don’t forget to check out the all-new Proton Exora. The car has arrived in the market and draws a lot of inspiration from its recently revamped siblings, the all-new Persona, 2019 Iriz, and X70. While the exterior looks more or less same, it’s the cabin that has received maximum changes. Features that can be found inside include a multi-purpose steering wheel, head unit, advance instrument console, and a new 7-inch infotainment system with 4G connectivity, part-leather upholstery, and more. Powering the new Exora is a 1.6-litre Campro Turbo engine that develops a maximum power of 138 hp and a peak torque of 205 Nm. The mill is coupled to a CVT automatic unit. The new Exora is available in two options (Premium & Executive), and its price starts at RM 59,800.
