The Malaysian EV family now has a new member, the Chery Omoda E5. The car made us wait for a pretty long time and now that it has been launched, we can’t keep calm.

While the first batch of the Omoda 5 is imported from China, its local assembly will begin soon, most probably by Q2 2024. Thus making the electric sister to the Omoda 5 SUV the first Chinese CKD EV in the country.

This news was confirmed by Chery Auto Malaysia Vice President, Lee Wen Hsiang, at a press conference where he informed that the model will be locally assembled by Inokom.

"We are thrilled to introduce the OMODA E5 to the Malaysian market," said Chery Malaysia Executive Vice President Leo Chen. "The OMODA E5 represents a significant step forward in
our mission to provide sustainable mobility solutions. We believe that the OMODA E5 will not only meet but exceed the expectations of Malaysian consumers, perhaps also setting new standards for green mobility."

Chen added that the OMODA E5 will be the first Chinese electric vehicle to be assembled in Malaysia. “By assembling our cars in Malaysia, Chery will be able to create more job opportunities and boost the local economy further. This initiative aligns with the government's policy of localisation compliance and will assist Malaysia to become a hub for EVs in the region,” he said.

Locally-assembled Chinese EV

As mentioned above, the Omoda E5 will be locally assembled in Malaysia. While it is not the first CKD EV in the country, it is the first among the recent batch of Chinese EVs, including BYD and MG.

First right-hand drive market

With the local introduction of the Omoda E5, Malaysia became one of the first right-hand drive markets to get the Omoda E5 (alongside Indonesia).

0 to 100 in less than 8 secs

The Omoda E5 is offered in one single trim option that is powered by a front-mounted motor that makes a maximum power output of 204 PS along with a peak torque of 340 Nm. The said configuration allows the EV to go from 0 to 100 kmph in just 7.6 seconds. Also, the car attains a top speed of 172 kmph.

400km+ range

The EV motor is powered by a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery (sourced from BYD) which delivers a range of 430 km in the WLTP cycle. Its power consumption is rated at 15.5 kWh per 100 km.

30 to 80% SOC in 28 mins

The latest Chery EV comes with a three-phase AC charger with a maximum rate of 9.9 kW. Also, part of the charging setup is a DC fast charger of up to 80 kW which can take the battery from 30 to 80% state of charge in just 28 minutes.

Charges your e-devices & appliances

The EV is enabled with a vehicle-to-load function that makes it a powerhouse that charges other devices. It can deliver up to 3.3 kW of power to electric appliances and devices. This function comes in handy during outdoor activities.

Looks like ICE-powered Omoda 5

The Omoda E5 EV looks similar to its ICE-powered sister Omoda 5 with the front-end being the only differentiator. The EV features an active grille shutter that opens up and closes according to motor temperature and aerodynamic requirements.

The Omoda E5 features an intelligent, smart cockpit utilizing a Qualcomm 8155 chip that offers seamless human-vehicle interaction. Complementing the system is a 24.6-inch curved 2K HD dual-screen offering an immersive visual experience.

Omoda E5 features a luxurious and expensive cabin and is meticulously crafted with a dual-tone blue & white-beige combo and all-black tone which sets the vehicle apart from the rest. Chery uses high-quality faux leather materials adding a luxurious feel.

Priced at RM 146,800, every purchase of the new Omoda E5 is accompanied by a class-leading warranty package including a 7-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, an impressive 8-year or 160,000km battery warranty, and an equally robust 8-year or 160,000km drive unit warranty which covers the Power Motor, Power Motor Control Unit, Power Battery Management System and the Vehicle’s Control Unit.

Additionally, if the battery’s state of health falls below 70% during the warranty period Chery Malaysia will offer a one-to-one exchange.
