Introduction:

With the drastic waning of fuel, there is an increasing demand of advanced technology that reduces fuel consumption. Many might still be unaware of this, but the Japanese auto giants are working on this for the past 18 years. Introduced in 1997, Toyota's hybrid vehicle Prius has set a milestone in the modern automotive sector. With its marketing spread across 80 countries, the brand has given a great reformation to the automobile sector. And now with the launch of third generation Prius in Malaysia, the brand has flourished by leaps and bounds. Available in two variants- Prius and Prius Luxury, the brand claims a revised new styling done to the Prius. Apart from this the brand has tried to be a bit more Eco-friendly by introducing carbon neutral plastics to some parts of the interior.

Engine, mileage and variants:

The Hybrid Synergy Drive in the Prius combines the power of efficient petrol engine and powerful electric motor. Under the hood there is a 1798 cc 4 cylinder in-line engine, which churns out 99 PS at 5200 rpm. Boosting a torque of 142 Nm at 4000 rpm, 2ZR-FXE engine allows it to attain a top speed of 177 km/h. The Nickel-Metal Hydride battery in this full hybrid car allows the high torque electric motor to knock a maximum power output of 82 PS with a decent torque output of 207 Nm. However the total max power output of the vehicle is 136 PS. Amalgamation of Exhaust gas recirculation and variable valve timing with intelligence under the same hood enables it to gain an exceptionally efficient fuel economy of 22.4 km/l in the city and 30.2 km/l on the highway.

Exteriors:

Unique body styling of the Prius enhances the performance as well as fuel economy of the vehicle. Innovative new design of the front speaks out the performance and technology it is packed with. Though producing high intensity illumination, the Auto leveling LED projector lamps reduces the power consumption of the vehicle. Special sensors equipped in the car, automatically turn the lights ON when its dark. Sleek new design of the fog lamps and Daytime running lamps adds appeal to the front bumpers. Measurements of 4480mm X 1745mm X 1490mm (LXWXH) is perfect to cut the excessive aerodynamic drag which eventually contributes to the fuel economy. 15 inch alloy of the car accommodates a tyre size of 195/65 R15.

Interiors:

The striking new interior of the Prius is the true result of innovative engineering done to it. Human centered design of the fascia accommodates a couple of ergonomically arranged controls, that eases the driving condition. Intelligent air cooling of the car ensures quick cooling and pollen less fresh air supply. 8-channel JBL audio system with 8 speakers offer a quality acoustic in the cabin and the electronic chromic mirror reduces the glare from the rear traffic. Steering mounted cruise control makes long distance driving simpler. Head-up Display in the car avails you with decent driver information parameters. With a flexible seating arrangement, the 445 litres boot space could be increased to a sumptuous size.

With ventilated disc type brake at front and solid disc type brake at rear, the car is installed with regenerative braking system that sores the waste kinetic energy in the form of electricity. Combination of McPherson strut suspension with stabilizer bar at front and torsion beam at rear, allows the car to car to maintain its stability even at high speeds. 7 SRS airbag system reduces the risk of injuries during frontal crash. Integrated control system equipped in the car improves the stability by reducing the risk of skidding, while encountering sharp turns. Smart entry and start system offers easy locking and unlocking of vehicle with just a push of button. Verdict:

Toyota Prius is no doubt a very environment friendly car with an excellent mileage and a plethora of innovative features, but the maintenance and price of the car outrun these positives.
