Triumph revealed the upcoming e-bike concept, the Project TE-1

KUALA LUMPUR: Back in February 2019, the British auto giant Triumph started polling the auto-enthusiasts on their interest in electric motorcycles, which later on resulted in kickstarting the development of an e-bike, codenamed as the Project Triumph TE-1. For this, the company joined hands with Williams Advanced Engineering, Integral Powertrain Ltd, and WMG at the University of Warwick, and the project is being funded by the UK Government’s OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles).

Fast forward to today, the second testing phase of the bike’s development cycle is over and thus here is our first look at the concept model. The company shares the design sketches of the Project TE-1 prototype, featuring a sporty and rather conventional design. However, the side pose reveals that in place of the engine, the TE-1 gets a battery and an electric motor.

“The completion of Phase 2, and the promising results achieved to date, provide an exciting glimpse of the potential electric future and showcase the talent and innovation of this unique British collaboration. Without a doubt, the outcome of this project will play a significant part in our future efforts to meet our customer’s ambition and desire to reduce their environmental impact and for more sustainable transportation," said Nick Bloor, Triumph CEO. 

According to the company, Project TE-1 has delivered “significant innovations in mass, battery technology, and powertrain performance” to date. The finished version is expected to weigh around 220 kg with an electric motor weighing just 10 kg. It will produce 178 PS of maximum power and will provide a range of 193 km on a single charge, thanks to a 15-kWh battery. In regards to battery charging capability, the company claimed that it will charge from zero to 80% in less than 20 minutes, which is quicker than modern smartphones.

Besides lighter motor and fast-charging capability, another unique thing about the bike is that it uses a prototype chassis with a main and rear frame optimized for the electric powertrain. As the project progresses, it will continue to be refined, the company is re-working for intuitive throttle response and regenerative braking, says Triumph.

Well, this is what the company revealed about the Project Triumph TE-1 as of now. It also stated that the working prototype of the e-bike will undergo road testing by the end of this year. So, on behalf of this statement, we can expect the production-spec version of the same by the end-2022.
