Iconic Kawasaki KLR650 is back with key improvements
KUALA LUMPUR: Many auto-enthusiasts had been waiting for the updated version of the iconic dual-sport motorcycle, the KLR650. Well, Kawasaki has ended their anticipation by unveiling the all-new 2022 Kawasaki KLR650. The new iteration comes with a host of updates, including new technology while staying true to its roots. Let’s have a look at the changes.
For 2022, the trusted 652-cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine received the addition of fuel injection technology offering increased reliability and fuel efficiency. According to the automaker, this change will enable the KLR650 to run more miles between fuel stops. More notable changes added to the exhaust system include the size reduction of the exhaust pipe diameter by 7.7 mm which improved mid-range torque characteristics for everyday riding. Alongside this, Kawasaki also made revisions to the five-speed gearbox, making it smoother and lighter shifting.
Talking about the chassis, the new KLR650 features the same semi-double-cradle frame but with several updates; the rear frame has now been integrated with the mainframe, the swingarm is now 30 mm longer, and also has a 2 mm larger pivot shaft. For suspension, there is a 41 mm fork at the front offering an impressive 200 mm of suspension travel, while at the rear, the system has a monoshock with 185 mm of travel.
On the braking front, there is a new single 300 mm brake disc at the front while at the rear the automaker has thickened the disc by 1 mm to improve heat dissipation under heavy braking. Another significant addition is ABS, although it is not yet confirmed that it would be switchable or not for off-roading purposes. The 2022 KLR650 rides on a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel.
The styling of the legendary model has also been changed a bit; the fairing is now more complex and angular, and the headlight has also been lifted and received LED treatment. The new model also has an all-new LCD screen featuring the basics of a speedometer, trip metre, odometer, fuel gauge, and indicator lamps. Adding to creature comforts are heated grips, a USB socket, and LED auxiliary lights.
