Completely revamped Yamaha XSR 900 breaks covers, gets extensive revisions

KUALA LUMPUR: Yamaha has lifted off the covers from the much-awaited updated version of the XSR900 for the global markets. The motorcycle is claimed to be an all-new machined while still retaining the original neo-retro essence which it is known for. Like before, the flagship neo-retro model from the XSR range is mechanically based on the MT-09, however, it comes with its individualistic visual appeal and set of features.

Yamaha has made major changes to the overall look of the motorcycle. Compared to the 1970’s inspired design of the erstwhile model, the new version of the XSR 900 reminds you of the slightly later retro roadster from the 1980s.

The XSR 900 now gets a unique looking single-piece seat that has an exaggerated hump at the back, making it look like a seat of a café racer. Details like a rounded headlamp with triangular silver clamps on its sides, a muscular bit simple looking fuel tank, minimalist side body panels and tail section do make it look like a motorcycle from the yesteryears.

However, there are enough modern design bits and features like all-LED illumination, 3.5-inch TFT instrument console, cool-looking bar-end rearview mirrors and underbody exhaust to make it feel like a modern-day motorcycle. The Yamaha XSR 900 also gets an extensive amount of contemporary riding aids like four riding modes, assist and slipper clutch, bi-directional quick-shifter, cruise control, 6-axis IMU, cornering ABS, cornering traction control, slide control system and anti-wheelie control.

The Yamaha XSR 900 gets the revised inline-three, liquid-cooled, 889cc engine from the MT-09, which here produces a maximum power output of 119 PS and a peak torque output of 93 Nm. There have been major changes to the frame as well, with the cast alloy Deltabox frame of the motorcycle now getting the assistance of a bolted-on longer swingarm. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the wheelbase and overall length of the motorcycle.

Other components which have been retained in the XSR 900 from the MT-09 are spin-forged alloy wheels, KYB upside-down forks at the front, KYB mono-shock at the rear and Brembo braking units at both front and rear.
