World’s first car-bicycle helmet crash test developed by Volvo
KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo is known for its immense effort in the field of car safety via its impressive design and engineering. And taking it all a notch up is the automaker’s recent partnership with POC Helmets of Sweden. Both have together developed the world’s first car-bicycle helmet crash test.
Under the Volvo-POC research project, cyclist detection safety features have been developed for Volvo cars that aims to avoid any sort of collision between the cyclist and cars. In this project were used dummy heads wearing POC bicycle helmets and they were launched at different speeds and angles towards a static Volvo car. All the crash tests were conducted at Volvo Gothenburg safety research facility in Sweden.
The said Volvo-POC collaboration takes the current safety standard in the field a step further. As per the current safety regulations, the bicycle helmet is dropped from varying heights on angled or flat surfaced with no account of a car to bicycle accident.
The project output and results will be used to make POC helmets safer and prepared in the event of an accident. As for Volvo Cars, they will be using the test results to design their car in a way that reduces injury in the case of a collision.
Malin Ekholm, Head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, said, “This project with POC is a good example of our pioneering spirit in safety.”
Care for a bit of history, well this is not the first time Volvo and POC have come together. As prior to this they worked on a project under which the car was connected to the helmets to help avoid a collision. The ongoing Volvo cars are tuned with collision preventive safety gears like cyclist detection with full auto brake and pedestrian detection with full auto brake.
