When will the Volvo ES90 come?
The Volvo ES90 is slated to make its global debut in March 2025.What is the Volvo SPA3 platform?
The Volvo SPA3 platform is designed to feature highly efficient third-generation electric motors and structural battery packs, offering enhanced scalability and performance. While the new Volvo EV will make its world premiere in March of next year, the automaker recently gave us a sneak peek with some initial details and shadowy images. As per that, the upcoming ES90 will be based on the same SPA2 architecture as the EX90.
The EV “will be for global audiences, including the EU, U.S., and Asia. But China may be its biggest market,” confirmed Chief Product and Strategy Officer Erik Severinson during the Volvo Capital Markets Day presentation held in Sweden last week.
The upcoming Volvo S90 is anticipated to borrow drivetrains from the EX90 as the two EVs share the same platform. The latter comes in Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance versions; the Twin Motor produces a maximum power of 408 PS and 770 Nm of torque while the Twin Motor Performance is tuned to generate 516 PS and 910 Nm. Both are equipped with a 111-kilowatt-hour battery pack, offering a driving range of 600 km on a single charge.
As per the initial reports, the ES90 is said to feature either 400 V or 800 V electric architecture. The expected dimensions are - 4,999 mm length, 1,945 mm width, 1,547 mm height, and a 3,205 mm wheelbase. These figures make the upcoming Volvo EV slightly wider and taller than the BMW i5.
Other than the ES90, the Volvo EX60 is also in the works. The EX60 is a mid-size electric SUV that will utilise Volvo’s next-generation SPA3 platform. This new platform will incorporate third-generation electric motors and structural battery packs. The motors will have 93% efficiency, up from 91% and 85% on previous units, confirmed the automaker.
After the EX60, Volvo plans to launch three more EVs that will share similar software and electrical architectures. In addition to these pure EVs, the Swedish automaker is also working on a "long-range PHEV" (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle). Despite earlier plans to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2030, the automaker has decided to continue improving its PHEV technology as the company’s internal data revealed that customers are using the electric-only mode in their hybrids nearly 50% of the time.
Closer to home, Volvo is ready to launch the EX30 on September 25, 2025. It is the brand’s smallest SUV that offers a driving range of up to 480 km.
