Volkswagen ID.8 electric SUV in the works
KUALA LUMPUR: Volkswagen Group has recently announced its NEW AUTO strategy for the decade that focuses on the electric and digital era of mobility. During the group-wide strategy presentation, the conglomerate talked about several initiatives that it will take for the electric transition, including a new EV platform and new software. At the event, the Volkswagen Group CEO, Herbert Diess also confirmed the arrival of the Volkswagen ID.8 large electric SUV.
The sixth member of the Volkswagen ID. family is said to be the all-electric equivalent of the VW Atlas/Teramont available in the US and China. It is a mid-size SUV which is the brand’s largest vehicle so far. It is based on the MQB platform and comes in three-row and two-row configurations. In the three-row version, the SUV measures 5040 mm in length and 1990 mm in width
Presently, the Volkswagen ID.family has five models covering a number of segments. These include the ID.3 equivalent to the VW Golf positioned in the hatchback segment. Next on the list are the ID.4 and ID.5 models that cover the SUV segment in which the brand sells the ICE-powered Tiguan.
Up next is the recently revealed Volkswagen ID.6; the electric sedan is equivalent to the Passat. And the last is the upcoming ID.Buzz that falls in the T7 Multivan segment.
At the moment, the German automaker did not reveal any details on the Volkswagen ID.8. However, we can assume that it will benefit from a more spacious cabin as compared to the Atlas. As the dedicated EV won’t have the oily bits associated with the ICE model.
After the ID.Buzz and ID.8, Volkswagen is also likely to bring the ID.1 and ID.2 electric cars based on the ‘MEB-Lite’ architecture. Well, there is no official confirmation on that.
