UMW Toyota to make a big announcement on 27th September

KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Toyota recently invested RM 270 million to upgrade its assembly line, in order to produce locally-assembled (CKD) hybrid models. And it will soon become a reality, according to a cryptic invite released by the company today.

Why do we think so? Well, the invite shared is loaded with marketing buzzwords like “experience tomorrow, today” and “life-changing”. Though the release misses out on direct vocab like “hybrid” or “electrification”, it certainly points in the direction via words like "power", "silence", and "energy".

UMW Toyota Motor President, Ravindran K said, “The availability of tomorrow’s possibilities today will quickly transform Malaysia’s economic and social landscape. The way forward is to commit and push ahead, even if it means breaking boundaries and challenging conventional ways,”

Further adding to the mystery was UMW Toyota Motor Deputy Chairman, Akio Takeyama statement that read, “At the risk of not revealing too much, let me just say we will be making a detailed announcement about this very soon, and it will have a big impact on not only the brand but the industry as a whole, and the lifestyle as well as choices that we have become so accustomed to."

However, with his mention of Toyota's global commitment to achieve zero carbon emission by 2050, the 'electrification' agenda is pretty much given. Also, the invite was accompanied by several images with the text “zero fuel consumption and carbon emissions”. Thus making our assumption strong.

As of now, the automaker has not revealed the models to receive the hybrid treatment here in Malaysia. However, if we were to guess, the Corolla Cross Hybrid ranks top on our list. Other possibilities include - Camry Hybrid and Corolla Hybrid.
