Two Toyota EVs and a PHEV arriving this year
KUALA LUMPUR: The Japanese auto giant, Toyota, led the way to the non-conventional fuel car path by introducing hybrid cars. Even today, it manufactures and sells all kinds of hybrid cars but unlike other brands, its journey from hybrid to pure-electric cars seemed rather slow. So much so, that now in 2021, Toyota will enter the pure-electric segment.
Inside EVs, an international auto portal was the first to report in 2019 about Toyota's plan to introduce pure electric vehicles. However, the pandemic certainly shifted the timeline for every automaker. Now, with things getting back on track, Toyota is again concentrating on pure EVs with a new PHEV and two EVs scheduled for the US market this year.
Details and the unveiling dates are still unknown and the limited information that we have comes through an unofficial announcement by Toyota Motor North America Executive VP, Bob Carter. He said, "We continue to be leaders in electrification that began with our pioneering introduction of the Prius nearly 25 years ago". He further added, "Toyota’s new electrified product offerings will give customers multiple choices of powertrain that best suits their needs.”
As per Automotive News, at least one of the two upcoming Toyota EVs will be an SUV. Brand's premium car wing, Lexus is also expected to introduce its first EV, however, it's unclear if the said car will be a part of Toyota's three-vehicle plan.
Toyota is currently working on a new battery-electric platform called e-TNGA which can be used in a variety of cars and its flexibility makes it perfect for various electric applications. Toyota has teased the platform once in 2019 and it is built in collaboration with Subaru. It is said to form the basis for several electric cars hailing from SUV, C-and D-segment.
As for the US market, Toyota with its new electric offering plan to expand its market share. It aims at 40% new vehicle sales coming from EVs by 2025 and 70% by 2030.
