Toyota reveals yet another crossover, the Urban Cruiser
KUALA LUMPUR: Crossover is currently one of the top-selling segments around the globe. Automakers, either mainstream or ultra-luxurious, are coming with the cars hailing from this segment. One of the most prominent brands working in the direction is Toyota. In recent times, the Japanese automaker has introduced several crossovers like the Corolla Cross, Yaris Cross, and Harrier/Veloz. And now we have another name adding to the list - the all-new Urban Cruiser.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser is based on Suzuki's Vitara Brezza and is the second product of the Toyota-Suzuki alliance. From a few images that the company has released, the Urban Cruiser seems to share its styling clues with the Fortuner, especially the front angular bumper. Other styling bits include a large two-slat grille flanked with vertical strips and LED headlights on either side, LED fog lamps with chrome surrounds, and LED daytime running lights.
On the inside, Toyota's new crossover features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rain-sensing wipers, smart entry start/stop, and automatic climate control. The cabin sure looks upscale with its brown seats and matching door inserts.
The sub-compact SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 105 PS of maximum power and 138 Nm of peak torque. The mill is paired to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed torque converter transmission. The car will be available in six trim options (Mid, Mid AT, High, High AT, Premium, and Premium AT) with only the AT models benefiting from the mild-hybrid tech that offers torque assistance idle engine start/stop and regenerative braking.
The car will be available in standard monotones colours like white, blue, grey, silver, and orange. In India, the Urban Cruiser is open for booking and is expected to go on sale soon. The car's Malaysian arrival seems highly unlikely as the crossover's debut in other markets is uncertain. But let's keep our fingers crossed because you never know who knocks on our door next?
