Toyota & Lexus might just introduce 3 EVs by 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: The 2019 Tokyo Motor Show is set to be a treat for automobile enthusiasts from around the world. Numerous vehicles that will be on display have already started making waves in the automobile space, and one among many is the brand-new pure-electric concept that Lexus will be unveiling at the mega event.
While the news of Lexus bringing its pure-electric concept to the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show has been circulating from some time now, the latest developments reveal that the luxurious wing of Toyota is ready to introduce three EVs in conjunction with its parent organisation, i.e., Toyota itself.
The move seems to be a very logical and understandable one since Toyota is the automaker that probably mainstreamed hybrid cars in the market with its Prius that made its way out out of the production facilities in 1997. Interestingly enough, Toyota has been vouching for hybrid tech in recent times citing the tech to be much more efficient than pure EVs. It will be very interesting to see how Toyota assists in Lexus launching three pure EVs by 2021.
"If you look at a hybrid, it’s a battery, engine, motor, and PCU. If you increase the battery part, then it becomes a PHEV. If you take ICE out, it becomes pure EV. We already have the technology. We’re waiting for the right time. It has to make business sense. It has to make a profit.
If you look at the facts of what’s happening in the market now; for example, PHEV technology is reflected in the price [of cars>. If we are going to have an EV in the line-up it has to be affordable to normal users", said deputy chief engineer Naohisa Hatta at the launch of the Lexus RX.
"Today, the most efficient route is the hybrid drivetrain in real-world situations", said a spokesperson when questioned about the differences between the hybrid systems of Toyota & Lexus. Furthermore, the spokesperson went on to applaud the updated Lexus RX's fuel efficiency of 18.28 kmpl. So, the times ahead for Lexus and Toyota look nothing but interesting and intriguing. We can't wait for the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show to begin, can you?
