The Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V will hit European dealerships in mid-2024.The mild-hybrid setup of the pickup truck comprises a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, a 48-volt lithium battery (mounted under the rear seats), and a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine propels the electric motor to charge the battery pack. This, along with regenerative braking, supplies an additional 16 PS and 65 Nm to the engine, taking the total system output to 204 PS at 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm between 1,600 rpm to 2,800 rpm.
“The new Hilux Hybrid 48V is more efficient, with improved performance and smoother driving in urban and off-road environments,” claims Toyota.
To equip the 48V system, Toyota upgraded the turbo engine with the addition of a new two-arm belt tensioner, a stronger belt material, and an enhanced stop-start system. Toyota says the modified engine also supports the non-fossil HVO100 diesel (made from 100% renewable sources), which further bolsters its environmental credentials.
Engine aside, the Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V comes in a dual cab form, measuring 5,325 mm in length with a 1,525-mm long bed. The showcased model is the top-spec Invincible, however, it is reported that other trims will also be offered with the hybrid mill. In terms of design, no changes are visible in the preview images.
Speaking about the off-roading capabilities, the pickup boasts a 29-degree approach angle, 26-degree departure angle, and an impressive ground clearance of 310 mm. It also excels in towing and payload capacity, handling 3,500 kg and 1,000 kg, respectively, while showcasing a water-wading capability of 700 mm.
