Toyota announces ITS technology to mass-market models
Kuala Lumpur: By the end of 2015, Toyota will make a new ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) safety package available on three models in Japan. The package, named ITS Connect, uses Japan’s standardized ITS frequency of 760 MHz to receive and share data transmitted by external infrastructure and other vehicles.
Equipping ITS on these three models will make Toyota the world’s first automaker to bring a driver assist function that uses a dedicated ITS frequency to market. By steadily expanding the range of vehicles equipped with ITS Connect, Toyota hopes to help reduce the number of accidents that occur near intersections. In Japan, this kind of accident accounts for roughly 40 percent of all traffic accidents.
ITS Connect uses two forms of communication, which are vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I). This will allow the cars to provide safety information to drivers, such as traffic signal information, and will alert drivers to vehicles or pedestrians lurking in blind spots.
V2I COMMUNICATION: RIGHT TURN COLLISION CONTROL
The V2I communication includes Right-Turn Collision Caution, Red Light Caution, and Signal Change Advisory to keep drivers up to speed on potential changes ahead of time. Right-Turn Collision Caution works when turning the vehicle right at an intersection, the system warns the driver by an audio and visual alert under different circumstances (e.g. is driver take his foot off the brake and start to move forward when another car is approaching from the opposite direction). If the signal is red and the driver does not ease off the accelerator, the Red Light Caution system will warn the driver with an audio and visual alert.
V2V COMMUNICATION: RADAR CRUISE CONTROL
The V2V communication includes Communicating Radar Cruise Control and Emergency Vehicle Notification, allowing drivers to keep a safe distance and stop when appropriate for emergency vehicles. Radar Cruise Control responds instantaneously to the acceleration and deceleration of other vehicles equipped with the same system. When an ambulance equipped with a compatible communication device is sounding its siren nearby, the Emergency Vehicle Notification system notifies the driver with an audio alert, and displays the approximate location and distance of the emergency vehicle, as well as the direction in which it is moving.

In 2013, Toyota participated in the ITS Green Safety public-private collaborative demonstration project to assess the social effects of such systems. Going forward, Toyota will participate and exhibit its ITS Connect Technology at the ITS World Congress in Bordeaux, France which is going to start from October 5 to 9.
