The beginning of this week was quite exciting for all the local car enthusiasts as the Malaysian electric vehicle market finally welcomed its first national EV, the Proton eMAS 7. The Proton EV remained in the spotlight through the week with significant updates, including its upcoming launch in different export markets, its safety rating, and its selection for the 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship.
In the meantime, the international automotive arena witnessed a few big reveals and received some exciting scoops on the upcoming ones. In case you missed out on any of that, here’s a quick recap of all the major happenings from the auto world.
Malaysia automotive market: Key updates
Proton eMAS 7 electric SUV launched
After several teasers and previews, Proton has finally launched its first EV, the eMAS 7. It is offered in two variants - Prime and Premium, priced at RM 109,800 (RM 105,800 for the first 3000 buyers) and RM 123,800 (RM119,800 for the first 3000 buyers), respectively.
Both variants are powered by the world’s leading 12-in-1 intelligent electric propulsion system mated to either a 49.52 kWh or 60.22 kWh Geely’s Aegis blade battery pack, offering a range between 345 km -410 km. The EV is packed with several best-in-class and only-in-class features, helping it stand out in the local EV space dominated by Chinese options.
Chery Malaysia gets SIRIM certification for EV batteries
Chery Malaysia has received SIRIM certification for its lithium EV battery pack powering the Omoda E5, marking a major milestone in the world of sustainable mobility in Malaysia. This technical achievement shows the brand’s commitment to rigorous safety and performance standards. It was granted by SIRIM QAS International, Malaysia’s premier body for certification, inspection, and testing.
GWM Haval Jolion HEV and Wey 80 launch confirmed
GMW is set to expand its lineup in Malaysia with the launch of the Haval Jolion HEV and Wey 80 next year. Ahead of their anticipated launches, the automaker has confirmed that the local production of these models will begin in April 2025. Notably, the Wey 80 previewed at the 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show, is specially made for the ASEAN market, hinting at its export potential.
GWM Malaysia hits a production milestone
Great Wall Motors has achieved a significant production milestone in Malaysia with the rollout of the 1,000th unit of the Haval H6 at the EP Manufacturing Berhad plant in Melaka. This accomplishment highlights the brand’s growing footprint in the local market and reiterates its commitment to offering high quality mobility solutions to customers. The Haval H6 comes in a single variant in Malaysia, powered by a 1.5-litre turbo hybrid engine generating a combined output of 243 PS and 530 Nm. The price begins at RM 139,800.
Proton ProCare Smart Plan launched
Proton has launched a new prepaid service package for its new and existing customers, called the ProCare Smart Plan. This special package is available for the Proton Saga, Proton X90, and Proton X70, offering savings of up to RM 670 (depending on the model). It is available in three- or five-year options for new customers with capped running costs for vehicle maintenance. However, the existing Proton owners can opt it for two years with savings of up to RM 350.
Proton eMAS 7 grabs 5-star safety rating
Co-developed with Geely and fine-tuned for local roads, the Proton eMAS 7 has passed the ASEAN NCAP crash tests with flying colours. With a total of 92.57 points out of 100, the EV earned a 5-star rating. The credit goes to its robust structural design, comprehensive airbag system, well-packed Aegis Short Blade battery pack, and cutting-edge safety systems.
Global automotive market: Key international launches and updates
Kia Syros revealed globally
The highly anticipated Kia Syros has made its world debut in the Indian market. It is a compact SUV with a design language inspired by the brand’s global EVs, including EV3 and EV9. The Syros is offered in two engine options: a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit generating a maximum power of 120 hp and a peak torque of 172 Nm and a 1.5-litre diesel mill tuned to make 116 hp and 250 Nm. Kia will be adding an all-electric variant to the lineup at a later date.
New Honda Prelude launching next year
Globally revealed at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, the all-new Honda Prelude concept is set to enter production soon with the launch expected in late 2025 in Japan and the US. The upcoming Honda Prelude is a hybrid-electric vehicle utilising an e:HEV dual-motor setup. It will introduce an innovative new drive mode, offering Linear Shift Control, delivering maximum levels of driver engagement. The Prelude is a striking two-door sports coupe, which previews the brand’s vision for the future of sports cars.
Honda teases upcoming electric vehicles
Honda is all set to unveil two prototypes of its 0 Series lineup (a sedan and a crossover) at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show 2025 in the US. These concept EVs will showcase the brand’s exclusive vehicle operating system, automated driving tech, and a new energy service. The Saloon concept will likely have a radical design, targeting the premium segment with a more affordable price than the Model S.
2026 Renault 5 Turbo 3E breaks cover
Renault has pulled the wraps off the 2026 R5 Turbo 3E in France. It is an electric hyperhatch inspired by the brand’s iconic model, the Renault 5 Turbo. This small electric hyperhatch is powered by dual in-wheel electric motors kicking out a maximum power of 507 PS. Power is sent to the rear wheels, allowing the hatchback to hit the century sprint in just 3.5 seconds. The vehicle boasts daring looks and a lightweight carbon structure. It is set to be a limited-edition model with a launch likely to happen in 2026.
Japan gets Suzuki Swift Sport ZC33S Final Edition
Suzuki has introduced an all-new Swift Sport ZC33S Final Edition in the Japanese market, bidding farewell to the popular Swift Sport. Setting this special edition hatchback apart from the standard model are unique design touches including striking graphics, black alloy rims, red brake calipers, and sporty interior details. Under the bonnet of this Japan-exclusive model lies a 1.40-litre turbocharged mill good for making 138 horsepower. It is paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic, priced at JPY 2,329,800 (RM 67,001) and JPY 2,401,300 (RM 69,057), respectively.
Toyota Alphard and Vellfire PHEVs Revealed in Japan
Toyota has introduced the plug-in hybrid versions of its popular MPVs, the Alphard and the Vellfire in Japan. Set to go on sale next year, these PHEV models are powered by a 2.5-litre engine and an electric motor, delivering a total output of 306 PS. The vehicles offer an all-electric range of 73 and a fuel economy of 16.7 kmpl. Other key highlights include - Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) functionality, a 1,500W external power supply, and a Smooth Stop system for improved ride comfort. The six-seater cabin boasts luxurious touches like Ultrasuede ceiling, a woodgrain steering wheel, and other hi-tech bits.
