TNB rolls out Maxus T90 EV : 5 things you need to know about Maxus' EV pickup truck
Recently, while driving through Bangsar where Tenaga Nasional's headquarters is located, we noticed a very interesting Maxus pickup truck. A post from paultan.org confirmed our suspicions: it's the Maxus T90 EV, part of Tenaga's electrified vehicle fleet in a pilot project.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What's the T90 EV's driving range?
Up to 354kmHow much will it cost?
It's been speculated that it'll range between RM220k - RM260kThis discovery sparked curiosity about whether these EV pickups will be exclusive to Tenaga or available for public purchase.
Interestingly, the Maxus T90 EV was previewed at the Maxus Mifa 9 MPV EV launch late last year, and it was hinted that an official introduction is planned for the first quarter of the year. This suggests that the Maxus T90 EV, potentially the first EV pickup in our market, could soon be made available to the public.
Given the recent developments, we're taking a closer look at the Maxus T90 EV, especially focusing on key aspects you should be aware of.
The Maxus T90 EV is an electric pickup truck. The truck is manufactured by SAIC Maxus Automotive Co., Ltd., commonly known as Maxus.
Maxus is a Chinese automotive brand under the ownership of SAIC Motor, which is one of the largest automotive manufacturers in China. The company specializes in the production of commercial vehicles, including a range of electric vehicles, and has been expanding its offerings to include electric models like the T90 EV.
In Malaysia, Maxus vehicles are distributed by Weststar Maxus. Weststar Maxus is part of the Weststar Group, a diversified Malaysian conglomerate with various business interests, including automotive distribution. They are responsible for the sales, distribution, and after-sales service of Maxus vehicles in the country.
The T90 EV is an electric version of Maxus's traditional pickup truck, the T90, offering a blend of the conventional pickup style with electric vehicle technology. This includes features like a rear-mounted electric motor and a large-ish battery pack for a decent driving range.
It's targeted at those who need the practicality of a pickup truck but are looking for an environmentally friendly, electric option. The T90 EV represents an evolution in the pickup truck market, moving towards electric mobility while retaining familiar design elements.
If this sounds interesting to you, read on as these are the 5 things you must know about the truck.
Drivetrain Specs
The Maxus T90 EV's single electric motor produces a respectable 201 bhp and 310 Nm of torque, complemented by a rear-wheel drive setup.
This level of power is thoughtfully balanced, providing enough punch for a high-riding, utilitarian pickup without going overboard. It's a practical approach that prioritizes utility and safety in a vehicle designed for versatility.
The Maxus T90 EV's rear-wheel drive configuration, while sufficient for general use, is a notable limitation, particularly for a pickup truck. Its biggest criticism stems from the fact that it doesn't offer all-wheel drive, which would significantly enhance its off-road capabilities.
This lack of AWD means the T90 EV might not be as adept at tackling rough terrains as some might expect from a utility-focused vehicle.
Electric Range and Charging
The T90 EV has an 88.6kWh battery, offering a 354-km of range. The pick up EV is equipped with two types of charging options to suit different needs. It features a Type 2 charging plug that supports 11 kW charging, ideal for regular home charging and CCS (Combined Charging System) plug that enables fast charging at 80 kW.
This faster option significantly reduces charging time, making it suitable for quick top-ups during longer journeys or when in need of a speedy recharge. Charging from 20-80% can be done in 45 minutes using an 80kW DC charger.
Performance
Acceleration and handling should be unique for a EV pickup, given its quiet electric motor and rear-wheel drive configuration. Since we're all accustomed to fast accelerating EVs, one would think that the T90 EV would have some oomph, but unfortunately it can only do 0-100km/h in 12.3 seconds.
To put that into perspective, a Ford Ranger Wildtrak with its bi-turbo setup can complete the 0-100km/h run in about 9.8 seconds, so yeah, not the fastest accelerating truck on the market.
Design and Capacity
Externally, it resembles its diesel counterpart, featuring a one-tonne payload and a 1,500kg towing capacity. Everything from the large chrome grille and two-tier headlamps, running boards, sports bar and large body cladding across the tailgate is the same.
The recharge socket for the Maxus T90 EV is located where the diesel truck's fuel filler would normally be. This design choice aligns with the vehicle's adaptation from a conventional diesel-powered model to an electric one, providing a familiar and accessible charging point for users.
Interior and Safety Features
Just like the diesel powered truck, the EV is equipped with a contemporary dashboard with a 10.25-inch touchscreen that includes radio, MP3, mobile link, and Bluetooth connectivity. The interior is mostly a blend of functionality and comfort.
It comes with a polyurethane multi-functional steering wheel and seats covered in artificial leather, ensuring durability and ease of maintenance. The front row seats offer 6-way electronic adjustment for enhanced comfort and convenience.
There's only a manual front air conditioner with a pollen filter. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with both 220V and 12V power outlets, catering to various charging and power needs.
Standard safety features include ventilated disc brakes at the front and rear, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Hill Start Assist (HAS), Roll Movement Intervention (RMI), and Hill Descent Control (HDC).
For added convenience and safety, it comes with a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. The vehicle is outfitted with airbags for the driver and front passenger, side airbags, and curtain airbags that extend from the front to the rear.
All passengers are secured with 3-point seatbelts, complemented by seatbelt reminders. Child safety is considered with ISOFIX mounts and Top tether points. Additionally, the T90 EV features rain-sensing windscreen wipers and a rear window with electric heating for defrosting.
Price
With the Maxus T90 EV already on Malaysian roads, thanks to TNB, it seems it has passed road tests and certification, leaving just its pricing to be settled. Estimated to be priced between RM220k and RM260k, it's on the higher end for a pickup without the prestige of a Raptor badge.
This pricing might make it a challenging sell considering its features. However, for those who value environmentally-friendly vehicles and don't mind a premium price tag, the T90 EV stands as a solid option in the green pickup truck segment for now - that is if it makes to the Maxus showrooms.
