KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has taken a key step in its electric vehicle journey by unveiling the name of its first electric car, which will be called the e.MAS 7. This announcement comes after the automaker introduced its EV sub-brand, the e.MAS, in June this year. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s automotive history as it will be the first-ever Malaysian EV.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will the Proton e.MAS 7 launch?

The Proton e.MAS 7 is set to launch in Malaysia by the end of this year.
  • What is the range of the Proton e.MAS 7?

As of now, details regarding the Proton e.MAS 7 motor, battery pack, and range remain under wraps.
  • Alongside announcing the name, Proton also revealed the camouflaged images and some preliminary details of the e.MAS 7. As widely speculated, it is now confirmed that the upcoming Proton EV is based on the Geely Galaxy E5.

The Proton e.MAS 7 is a C-segment SUV built on the advanced Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform, offering superior performance, handling, and comfort.

According to the automaker, the EV is designed to cater to the needs of modern lifestyles offering ample space and utility. It measures 4,615 mm in length, 1,901 mm in width, 1,670 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

Developed in close association with Geely, the e.MAS 7 results from collaborative effort in product strategy, engineering, design, and quality control. Over one hundred Proton engineers contributed to ensure that the EV meets the needs of Malaysians.

The Proton e.MAS 7 packs groundbreaking features such as the world’s leading 12-in-1 intelligent electric propulsion system and a cell-to-body battery architecture. These innovations enhance structural strength, increase interior space, and improve handling, says the automaker.

The EV also features the innovative Flyme Auto Connectivity System integrated with the local IHU system and the Telematic Service Provider supporting various advanced functions. It will support continuous updates for the navigation systems and telematics services. With these advancements, the Proton's first electric car aims to set a new standard in the EV segment for both technology and driving experience.

Proton has invested heavily in developing the EV’s chassis to ensure exceptional driving dynamics on Malaysian roads. It has undergone extensive testing, including 700,000 man-hours and 10 million kilometres, which ensures the EV is road-ready and safe.

“Our goal with the Proton e.MAS 7 is to fulfill our promise of delivering Malaysia’s first national all-electric vehicle. With the groundbreaking technology embedded in it, we are confident it will not only impress with its innovative breakthroughs but also deeply resonate with our audience on an emotional level. As we eagerly anticipate its imminent presence on the roads, we are excited to reveal more about the Proton e.MAS 7 in the coming months,” said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.

The Proton e.MAS 7 meets the Malaysian Government’s Electric Vehicle Agenda calling for national carmakers to roll out EVs by 2025.

The Proton e.MAS 7 is set to launch in Malaysia by the end of this year. The distribution will be handled by PRO-NET which holds an extensive network of 29 outlets. Before the EV's launch, it plans to have 25 dedicated e.MAS showrooms up and running.
