Kuala Lumpur: 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) is running with all bliss and blaze and along with it, there was one more event that grabbed a lot of attention across the globe. The North American Car&Truck of the Year Awards, hence we have decided to give you a brief account on these awards to clear all the doubts around it. These unique awards are given by a group of 53 international automotive journalists. The major reason behind its uniqueness is because it is given by pro-bono automotive journalists from the USA and Canada. The award is being given every year at the opening day of North American International Auto Show in Detroit. These awards can be considered as the most outstanding awards because of the parameters like design, innovation, safety performance, driver satisfaction, handling and value. These awards are currently running in their 22nd year and are inspired from the “Car of the Year” awards in Europe.
This year the North American Car & Truck Of The Year Awards were given to the Honda Civic for the ' North American Car of the Year' and the all-new Volvo XC90 was chosen as the 'North American Truck of the Year'. Among the finalists in the Car of the Year category, there was Civic beat, the Chevrolet Malibu, and Mazda MX-5 while among the Truck of the Year category Honda Pilot and Nissan Titan XD were the finalists. Here are some general facts about the North American Car & Truck Of The Year Awards:
- First of all, the awards called as “North American Car of the Year” and “North American Truck/Utility of the Year,” not “Car of the Year” or “Truck of the Year”.
- The winners of these awards are announced at the North American International Auto Show, however, the Auto Show is not responsible for giving the awards.
- The Vehicles which are “substantially changed” over the year are eligible for the awards. This year the jurors considered more than 50 vehicles. However, the voting was conducted only for 10 cars and 12 truck/utilities on the ballot.
- The selection process is completely fair and is conducted under the supervision of Deloitte LLP Detroit. Jurors are given 25 points to distribute among their cars and trucks of choice and no more than 10 points may be given to a single vehicle. After this, all the scores are sent to Deloitte, which reveals the results at the opening day of Detroit Auto Show.
- In the last 21 years, domestic automakers have been awarded the North American Car of the Year 12 times while foreign automakers have won only nine times. Japanese automakers have totally bagged three wins while Europeans received four awards.
