Tesla Model 3 and Model S recalled for front trunk & camera problem

Tesla Model 3 and Model S recalled for front trunk & camera problem

KUALA LUMPUR: Tesla has recalled a total of 475,318 vehicles over issues affecting the Model 3 and Model S.

Let us now look at each Tesla model recall in detail, starting with the Model 3 -

Tesla has recalled a total of 356,309 units of the Model 3, all produced between July 15, 2017 to September 30, 2020.

Why? The problem with the affected Model 3 units pertains to the wiring harness in the trunk that has a coaxial cable responsible for the video feed of the rearview camera. The automaker has sighted that over time with opening and closing of the trunk this cable can wear out or get potentially damaged. Thus resulting in a flickering video feed.

Issue: The issue first came to light in July 2021 by the automaker’s Field Quality team. The crew then investigated the issue until December 10, 2021 that resulted in 2,301 warranty claims and 601 field reports in the US. However, to date, there is no evidence of injuries, crashes, or deaths.

Solution? Tesla technicians will inspect the wiring of the affected unit. If the cable is worn out, the car will get a new trunk harness and a guide preventing the problem from recurring. In case there is no problem with the wire, techs will install the guide.

Tesla Model S recall -

The Model S recall covers 119,009 cars, all manufactured between September 16, 2014 to 23rd December 2020.

Problem? The said Model S recall refers to the problem with the secondary latch assembly for the front storage area might be aligned too far rearward. This might prevent the frunk from latching. So, if the primary latch somehow releases and the secondary latch is not engaged, the frunk could open and block the driver’s view.

Issue: The Tesla Field Quality team began looking into the issue in January 2021, while investigating a case where the frunk of a 2018 Model S opened while the car was in motion. The root cause of the issue was discovered in December and the crew found four warranty claims and three field reports in the US. There are no reports of injuries, crashes, or deaths.

Solution? The secondary frunk latch of all the affected Model S will be inspected by Tesla technicians. In case the latch is misaligned, the techs would reposition and reassemble the pieces.

For both the Model 3 and Model S, Tesla plans to contact the affected car owners on February 18, 2022.
