Tesla Cybertruck rival GMC Hummer Supertruck sets for premiere this fall
KUALA LUMPUR: The year 2021 is going to be the year for all-electric vehicles and would significantly accelerate the electric revolution of the automotive industry. Among so many upcoming EVs, the all-new Hummer electric truck would be a fantastic treat to the eyes. Yes, the name once synonymous with huge, gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs is about to go electric now.
General Motors originally planned to unveil the rebooted Hummer on May 20 but postponed the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the firm scheduled a full reveal this fall; however, the date is yet to be announced.
Rather than bringing back HUMMER as a standalone brand, General Motors opted to make it a model line under GMC. The all-electric Supertruck is slated to launch in late 2021 to take on the likes of Tesla Cybertruck. It will be followed by the Hummer SUV.
Recently, GMC teased the looks of the model once more, and this time with outlines defining the shape of the truck and SUV bodies. The shadowy teasers show the full profiles inspired by the boxy, military look of the HUMMER H2, discontinued in 2009. Both appear to have aggressive off-road tyres. The Hummer truck seems to have a crew-cab, short-box configuration with a squared-off front end, while Hummer SUV is a boxy four-door with aggressive fender flares.
Being dubbed as an all-electric "Supertruck", the new Hummer will tout 1,000 hp and an astonishing 11,500 lb-ft (15591 Nm) of torque. That will enable the truck to hit 100 kmph in about 3 seconds.
According to GM, the Hummer EV truck has "remarkable on- and off-road capabilities." The powertrain will use the brand's new Ultium batteries that can support capacities from 50 kWh to 200 kWh and incorporate both 400- and 800-volt designs. With the latter one, 80 percent charging will be done in less than 30 minutes.
General Motors will open the order books for the Hummer EV when production kicks off in late 2021.
