SPIED: Volvo XC40 Test Mule Undergoing Trials on Public Roads in Sweden
Kuala Lumpur: Volvo engineers are working hard at expanding their range of compact SUVs/Crossovers. While the new XC 90 is already out and running on its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and the S90 sedan and V90 estate are all set to make their global debut, spy photographers have managed to capture test mule of the sub-XC60 crossover – XC40 undergoing trials on public roads in Sweden.
At the moment, we can't tell you about the exterior of XC40 because instead of using sheets of camouflage to disguise XC40, the Swedish automaker has dropped a modified body of the existing V40 Cross Country atop their new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). However, there are many telltale signs that help us to identify it as a test mule of Volvo's XC40 compact SUV. For example, the ground clearance of the test mule is a lot more than that seen on the V40 range before. Not even the V40 Cross Country has been seen featuring such tall ground clearance.

Also, the rear door of the test mule clearly suggests that the wheelbase is remarkably different that of the existing V40. Moreover, the seam running down the rear door of the test mule also hints that the length of the body has been revised in order to accommodate a larger wheelbase. Hopefully, we would be able to tell you more about the compact SUV next time its test mule is spied.
The XC40 is expected to make its global debut sometime in 2017 and its powertrain may include Volvo's latest range of Drive-E petrol and diesel engines with a T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid almost guaranteed.
