Second-gen Toyota GR86 now on sale in Japan

KUALA LUMPUR: First unveiled in April this year, the all-new second-generation Toyota GR86 goes on sale in Japan. Like the first-gen model, the new iteration is also co-developed with Subaru and shares underpinnings with the new BRZ. 

Toyota offers the new sports coupe in two variants - SZ and RZ at a price ranging between 2,799,000 yen (RM 101,921) and 3,512,000 yen (RM 127,880). It is also available via the KINTO ONE car subscription service at a monthly cost of 21,450 yen (RM 783).

Under the hood, the car is equipped with a 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-four gasoline mill that kicks out a maximum power output of 235 PS at 7,000 rpm and a peak torque of 250 Nm at 3,700 rpm. The drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or six-speed Super ECT automatic. 

With this new mechanical setup, the coupe can complete the century sprint in 6.3 seconds i.e. 1,1 seconds faster than before. The setup is not only faster but also more responsive and provides smooth, stress-free sensations from low to high rpm, says Toyota.

Also, the new Toyota GR86 has 50% more torsional rigidity with a reinforced chassis mounting system.  It now weighs between 1,260 to 1,290 kilograms thanks to high-tensile steel plates and aluminum roof, bonnet, and front fenders.

Included in the significant exterior highlights are GR-specific Functional MATRIX Grille, Bi-LED headlamps, LED tail lamps with signature lighting, and several aerodynamic bits like front air outlets, side sill spoilers, and a ducktail rear spoiler. 

Inside, the GR 86 features a BOXER Meter, comprising a 7-inch color screen and LCD meters, sports seats, GR start-stop button, three drive modes (Normal, Sport, and Track), and dual-zone automatic air-conditioning. Active Sound Control and Subaru's EyeSight Driver Assist safety suite are also available.

The all-new GR86 is now available at GR Garage and Toyota authorized dealerships in Japan. Toyota aims to sell 700 units of sports coupe monthly.
